MEMPHIS, Tenn.--The Ole Miss women's golf team returned to action Monday at the Memphis Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Memphis at Ridgeway Country Club.

The Rebels sit in second in the team standings behind Memphis after firing 300-309--609 in their first tournament of the fall season.

Head coach Kory Henkes is looking forward to correcting some mistakes in the final round.

"We threw away some shots around the green, which cost us," Henkes said. "We talked with the players about some better course management options for tomorrow which I think will help."

Senior Abby Newton (Katy, Texas) lead the way for Ole Miss and sits in second in the player standings after firing a 73-73--146 in the first two rounds. Newton is one shot back from the leader, Madison Thomas of Memphis.

She carded seven birdies between the two rounds, and had a nice 7-hole streak of par or better to build some momentum in her second round.

"I had a very up and down round and just tried to stay calm and focused," Newton said. "I'm very happy with how I finished my last nine holes today, and I'm looking forward to a great final round tomorrow."

Henkes is pleased with the 36-hole performance from her senior, who's in position to take medalist honors for the second straight year.

"Abby had two solid rounds today," Henkes said. "I know she felt like she left some shots out there, but overall it was a great start. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings her, because it's always great to put yourself in contention."

Ole Miss hits the course again tomorrow at Ridgeway Country Club, teeing off at 8:30 a.m. in a shotgun format.
