BRASELTON, Ga. - The Ole Miss women's golf team finished in second place at the CSU Fall Invitational held at The Château Élan Golf Club after posting record scores throughout the two-day tournament. The runner-up finish is the second of the season for the Rebels, who also finished as runner up at the Memphis Intercollegiate in September.
The 291-278-284-853 tournament score is the best in program history by over 20 strokes and earned the Rebels a second place team finish at 11-under par. The winner, Chattanooga, posted 12-under par 852 to win the Fall Invitational.
"What an unbelievable week," head coach Kory Henkes said. "Drew (Belt) and I are so proud of this team. Even though we fell one shot short of winning, we accomplished so much this week."
"We had the low round both yesterday and today, which is incredible," Henkes added. "We are looking forward to building on this foundation for the remainder of the season."
Leading the charge in the tournament for Ole Miss was senior Abby Newton (Katy, Texas) who carded a 1-under par 71 in her final round, bringing her final score to 70-65-71-206 and earning her runner-up honors. The three-day total for the senior is the second lowest in school history and is a new tournament low for the Texas native.
Junior Madisen Bentley (University Place, Wash.) had another great day as well, firing a 3-under par 69 and finishing in third place. The three-day score of 74-68-69-211 is a career-best for Bentley.
Henkes says the performances by Newton and Bentley are no surprise to her.
"Abby and Madisen tore it up this week," Henkes said. "We knew it was just a matter of time before they made a breakthrough and it was fun to watch."
The Rebels look to continue their forward momentum Oct. 20 when they head to Oahu, Hawaii for the Rainbow Wahine Invitational hosted by the University of Hawaii.
"I'm so proud of my team this week and all the hard work we've put in," Newton said. "We keep improving each week and I'm excited to see how we can finish up the fall season in Hawaii."
