O'AHU, Hawaii
- The Ole Miss women's golf team is in good position going into the second day of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational hosted by the University of Hawaii after a great first round.

Ole Miss shot a 6-over par 294 to lock in the top spot on the leaderboard after the first day, but the BYU Cougars are close behind the Rebels after firing a 7-over 295. Competition is tight at the top with just three strokes separating the top three teams.

"Today was a pretty solid start," head coach Kory Henkes said. "We definitely left a few shots out there though."

The Rebels have three players in the top-15, with senior Abby Newton (Katy, Texas) sitting tied for fourth after shooting a 1-under par 71.

Newton's first-day round of 71 is her fourth straight round under par. Her success Tuesday was anchored by her nearly bogie-free round, with her only slip up coming on the par four 14th hole

"Today I didn't strike the ball well, but I was able to stay calm and focused," Newton said. "I scrambled a lot and came out with a good score."

Also joining Newton in the top-15 of the individual standings was junior Madisen Bentley (University Place, Wash.) and senior Alison Hovatter (Meridianville, Ala.) who sit tied for 11th and tied for 13th place, respectively. Bentley carded a 1-over par 73, while Hovatter fired a 2-over par 74.

Ole Miss is back on the course Wednesday at 8:00 a.m. HT, and will be paired with players from BYU, Sacramento State and South Dakota State. Fans can begin to follow the action at 1:00 p.m. CT via GolfStat.
