MEMPHIS
- The Ole Miss women's golf team kicked off the 2014-15 campaign on Monday with 36-holes of golf at the Memphis FedEx Invitational. The Rebels certainly didn't disappoint and are sitting tied for third place with a two-round score of 22-over par 590, while Stani Schiavone is tied for first with a two-under par 140.

It's a tight race atop the leaderboard with Middle Tennessee leading the field with a 12-over par 580, while host Memphis is just a stoke back at 13-over par 581. In fact, just 15 strokes separate first through fifth place.

"I'm pleased with our process today and how we handled the course," said head coach Michele Drinkard. "We need to make a few improvements for tomorrow and then tee it up and take care of business in the final round."

In the first fall tournament, Ole Miss relied on Schiavone and Newton who set the tone for the team in the first round. Schiavone made par the first five holes and then birdied No. 6 and No. 7 to close the front nine at even par. Newton, who was 3-over par on the front nine, settled down for the back nine and was 1-over par to close the first round at 2-over 73. As a team, the Rebels combined for 13 birdies in the first round.

Ole Miss continued their consistency into the second round and saw its scores improve across the board. Newton took her game to the next level and recorded four birdies to go with just one bogey, making par the rest of the way for a team-low 68, which is a new 18-hole low for the Katy, Texas native.

Newton was focused from the outset and was prepared for the challenge of 36 holes.

"I knew it was going to be a long day and that I needed to stay focused to continue to give myself opportunities," said Newton. "I stuck to my process and continued to stay patient which resulted in two good rounds. I'm looking forward to another great day tomorrow."

Not to be outdone, Schiavone fired a 69 in the second round, just one stroke off her career low for 18 holes. The senior posted five birdies and was 2-under par on the front nine. Alison Hovatter bounced back with a second round of 4-over par 75, while Taelor Rubin and Madisen Bentley each recorded a 6-over par 77. Freshman Sofia Idoyaga made her collegiate debut and fired a two-round score of 158, while Maria Toennessen posed a score of 156 with rounds of 77 and 80.

Schiavone also contributes sticking to her process for her low scores as well as staying comfortable.

"I felt comfortable today and had good focus," said Schiavone. "I'm looking forward to finishing strong tomorrow."

Drinkard is pleased with the play of both Newton and Schiavone and looks to them to help set the tone for the entire team.

"We definitely have a one-two punch with Stani and Abby," said Drinkard. They were so focused today and played within themselves which helped set the tone for our team."

The Rebels will close action at the Memphis FedEx Intercollegiate on Tuesday with an 18-hole shotgun start at 8 a.m. Follow the action live HERE.
