From the Head Coach….
Ole Miss head coach Michele Drinkard is ready to open up the season and is eager to see how the Rebels hard work over the summer has paid off, as well as integrate the new faces into the lineup.
"Season is here and we have had solid practice sessions and qualifying rounds preparing ourselves for the Memphis Tournament," said Drinkard. "This team has bought into the idea of focusing on our process, putting in our preparation and having our passion focused in the right areas. Now it's time to play our game and have fun.
Sticking to the process has been a big area for the Ole Miss women's golf team this offseason. Drinkard has been pleased with where the team is in this regard entering the first fall tournament.
"Before we leave we will have a walk through very similar to what other team sports do in simulating our pre-game process and iron out all the details that each individual player needs to do before teeing it up including going over a yardage book," said Drinkard. "After that, it's game on, tee it high and let it fly! It is going to be a fun year to follow our program.
We're Back!
The Rebels return six players from the 2013-14 squad. The team is lead by seniors Stani Schiavone and Taelor Rubin who both saw action in each of Ole Miss' tournaments last season and are fired up to start their senior seasons.
We're excited to start our season at Memphis," said Schiavone. "We've worked hard preparing and are excited to get out there and play."
Rubin is equally excited to play and has started to reflect on this being her last season in Oxford.
This week at Memphis is really important to me because it marks the start of my last season as a Ole Miss Rebel," said Rubin. "I can't express how excited I am to get out there and play golf. We as a team have been preparing since we got back to campus and I know it's going to be a good week for our team."
Also returning is 2014 NCAA Regional participant Abby Newton. Newton also believes the team is ready to make some noise this season.
"I'm very excited for our first tournament of the season and I know the team is ready and will start strong," said Newton. "We've been working very hard all summer and our team practices the last several week have been very productive. We have a lot of depth as a team and I'm looking forward to a great year."
Rounding out the Ole Miss returners are juniors Alison Hovatter and Kaitlin Voll and sophomore Maria Toennessen.
Welcome to the Squad
This season the Rebels welcome two new faces in freshman Sofia Idoyaga and Portland State transfer, Madisen Bentley. Idoyaga comes to Oxford all the way from Buenos Aires, Argentina and joins sophomore Maria Toennessen as internationals on the Ole Miss squad. Bentley, a sophomore, joins the Ole Miss squad from Washington state where she spent her freshman season playing for the Vikings. Bentley set the freshman scoring record for Portland State and only shot over a 77 three times in 2013-14.
Tough Fall Slate on Tap
The Rebels will play five fall tournaments this year. After opening at the Memphis FedEx Intercollegiate, Ole Miss will travel to the Cougar Classic (Sept. 14-16) hosted by the College of Charleston before taking some time off. Ole Miss will get back on the course at the UNC Tar Heel Invitational (Oct. 10-12) before traveling to the Mercedes Benz Classic (Oct. 17-19), which is hosted by Tennessee. Ole Miss will close the fall slate at the Jim West Challenge (Nov. 1-3) hosted by Texas State.
Drinkard Opens Eighth Season at Ole Miss
Ole Miss head coach Michele Drinkard opens her eighth season at the helm of the Ole Miss program this week. Drinkard has led the Rebels to six NCAA regional appearances in her eight years at the helm.
