Ole Miss vs. LSU
Tiger Stadium - Baton Rouge, La.
Oct. 25, 2014

Ole Miss Head Coach Hugh Freeze

Opening statement…
"Difficult. We've been on the good side of these for seven (weeks) in a row now. This league is brutal, it's difficult each Saturday to win football games. Particularly when you may not play your best, and you suffer some injuries you're not used to having and you've got to play some other kids. That hasn't happened to us this year, but give LSU a ton of credit. We knew last week they figured out who they wanted to be. That's the best offensive line we've played, and the running backs were very, very good. Defensively, they're kind of coming into their own. We obviously needed to generate some points. We had one touchdown called back. Then in the second half, we were pretty ineffective. That falls on me, and our coaches on offense. Our kids fought, I thought our defense gave us a chance to win the game. We just could not manage any points."

On the decision to not kick a field goal with nine seconds remaining in the game …
"After the penalty, it pushed it back to a 48-yarder from the right hash which is not his (Gary
Wunderlich's) favorite deal. With nine seconds on the clock, I thought we could sprint out and either take the flat throw right now or throw it out of bounds. Still worst case, we would be at the same point. We were trying to get it to the left hash for him or left-middle. We just didn't get it done there."

On the team's offensive problems…
"They were pretty good, number one. They were able to stay in two high on first and second down and stop our run game. We struggled there with (left tackle) Laremy (Tunsil) out for most of the second half, and we had to move some people around. That caused us some issues with playing younger kids, and they struggled a little bit in this environment against a really good defense. We had some chances, just the little things like on a second down play. You're one yard short or two yards short. We just didn't seem to win many of the one-on-one's, running back versus defensive back. They tackled extremely well. There were a lot of third downs, and we didn't convert hardly any."

On LSU's power running game…
"They just wore us down and kept the ball from us. We didn't have, but maybe two possessions in the second quarter. They just ate the clock, and they're really good up front. That offensive line is really solid, and their backs are really good. That's the first time we've faced an offense quite like that. They fought their guts out, and we held them to 10 points. You've got to feel pretty good about your chances, you can't really complain. We would have liked to have some more possessions, but in the third quarter we got stops and couldn't generate any points."

On the game's final play…
"I'm not going to talk about it. One-on-one, threw it up - (it's) done."

On the team's performance in the second half…
"Very frustrating, frustrating - I just think we didn't make the plays when we had to."

On the atmosphere …
"It's a crazy atmosphere. This is the craziest place I've played. Absolutely was a factor. Every SEC stadium is going to be a factor."

On the mood in locker room …
"We're ready. We're thinking everybody is going to have one loss now. We have Auburn coming to our place next week. That's what our mind is on right now."

#6, Jaylen Walton, RB
On the second half…
"They were just making more plays than us defensively. Offensively, we had some great blocks
and great opportunities to make these plays and first downs. They just pretty much played their
hands right."

On the team's injuries…
"It was totally different. As far as the center position, Ben [Still] leads the field a lot better, but it was a hard game. All we could do was play the 60 minutes."

On mood in locker room…
"It was pretty much confident. We have to play 60 minutes. We won the first 30 , and I guess we lost the last 30. They just played better than us."

On undefeated record change…
"It won't be difficult at all [to recover]. We play great teams every week. LSU is not the only
team that is capable of beating us … Every week is a hard game so we have to go back to the
drawing board and have a better preparation."

#29, Justin Bell, RG
On problems in the second half…
"I think it was more so us. Just us as a group, it just has to click. It wasn't the crowd noise. We
had a good run in the first half so that wasn't it, but it's all on us."

On the team's preparation and if they were prepared …
"We expected the loops. We saw them on the field, and they gave it to us. I feel like for the
most part we did a great job picking up those loops. In this game that we play, it can't be
perfect."

LSU Head Coach Les Miles

Opening statement…
"First of all I would like to commend Ole Miss, what a great game. What a great quality team. Coach Freeze has done a great job. They ran into a team that is improving and believe they can find ways to win. They are special. I'd like to thank the people who have found it in their time to
wish me well and send their condolences for my mom (Martha Miles). I had a rough night last night. I did have to tell the team. I told the team prior to the game that my mom had passed away, last night around ten o'clock. The concert that I had was the condolences. That kind of
emotion could be something you don't want when you go play a very violent and physical game. I spent time today thinking about the way that I needed to tell them. I needed to let them know that when they see me on the sidelines it is not about who has passed, but it has only to do with the fact that I am looking for every opportunity and advantage for us to win. They need to see me as an aggressive man. After the game, I can't tell you the number of young men that threw arms around me to tell me that they loved me. It was touching as anything I've had happen. They gave me the game ball that I only accept on behalf of a great team, a team that really comes out and says 'You know, we can be a whole lot better. We can improve. We can go to work.' You guys hear me say that they are going to improve, and that they are coming. We are going to be special because this s a team that is ambitious, so I accept it. Martha Miles, this is a great night, considering. I miss you mom. Now, it took a great defensive effort. Ole Miss has a very capable offense, and we played very well. If you look at how we controlled the ball on the ground, Anthony (Jennings) balanced and worked situations. It wasn't perfect, but he gave us every opportunity for victory. Leonard Fournette with (over) 100 yards. Terrence Magee got a little knick and got 75 yards. Kenny Hilliard came in in the back end of the game, he came in fresh, and he picked up 64 very very difficult yards. Anthony Jennings, 8 for 16 with 142 yards. That was a great game wasn't it. One thing about these Tigers: If you put them in Tiger Stadium, and give us a little time to fix things, we are going to be very special. This team wanted to make this night special, and they did."

On having depth at running backs …
"Obviously, the team was hot early. Seven (Leonard Fournette) came in and just ran very physical and made big plays. Kenny Hilliard on the back end of the game, I just said no and ran through some tackles and was not going to be denied a first down. If we would have gotten to
Darrel Williams, he would have done the same thing. (Offensive Coordinator) Cam Cameron called a great game and really has a knack for the right play. Chief (Defensive Coordinator John Chavis) was great, and they made real adjustments with stops. The defense played great. Special teams played, except for a punt returner, we could not get him right darn it, but he will get it right because he is getting better, like we all are."

On Logan Stokes …
"Secret weapon … Don't tell anybody. He is going to catch twelve balls next time. It's all part of the overall scheme. Cam (Cameron) makes a great call, and there it is."

#52, Kendell Beckwith, LB
On the score after halftime…
"I just knew we had to go out there and play harder. We had to play our defense and keep giving our offense the ball."

On the team's performance after halftime…
"We responded well as a whole, and we knew what we had to do. We tried to capitalize on the big plays, and the opportunities we were offered. We came back in the second half and made those plays happen. I feel like we had them where we wanted them, and I thought we needed
to finish it off. I think we did that."

On the crowd storming the field …
"It was crazy. It was a time I'll never forget. I've always seen it happen on TV, and it was my first time ever happening to me. It was crazy."

#26, Ronald Martin, S
On if the seniors have gotten the season back on the right track…
"I wouldn't say so much the seniors, but most of us gather those guys up and get those guys to rally around us. Coach (John) Chavis challenged us early in the week to be prepared and to take on the challenge because last year those guys (Ole Miss) threw for over 300-plus yards on us.
Coach (Corey) Raymond challenged us also. We just have to step up to the challenge."

On the defense's ability to move on to the next play and stay focused on the end result…
"Just keep playing - just going out and stopping them because if they can't score, eventually we knew our offense was going to make something happen."

#32, Jalen Collins, CB
On the keys to the defense's success…
"Our preparation and just having each other's backs. Doing our jobs, doing what we're supposed to do and just coming together."

On what happened on the potential turnovers he missed during the game…
"The first one they hit me. Then the second one, I felt like he threw it behind me but just got to keep making those plays."

#10, Anthony Jennings, QB
On the performance of TE Logan Stokes…
"He has been doing a great job blocking throughout the year. I told him I would make up for the missed touchdown pass against Kentucky, and I am glad he came up big when it mattered. I had great confidence in him."

On the physical play of the game …
"We did a good job of maintaining our composure. It was a big atmosphere. We let them do most of the trash talking, and we never let it distract our focus during the game."

On the effort of his teammates …
"We always have a next play mentality. That is a characteristic of our team. Our running backs ever lost sight of confidence even after fumbling. They kept fighting until the end of the game."

#7, Leonard Fournette, RB
On the holes the offensive line opened up for the run…
"They did a tremendous job. We just had to make an adjustment in the second half. They were calling the perfect plays. I felt great with the calls and the (offensive) line. It was a great win as a whole."

On the news of Martha Miles passing and how it affected their preparation…
"We kind of had a heart-to-heart because of what he said. It was an emotional moment because when he said that, I thought about my mother and what I would do if I lost my mother. We dedicated this game to Mrs. Martha, to coach, for ourselves and for our families. It was tough seeing him. That is a real man … That is a man."

#55, Elliott Porter, C
On the last offensive possession of the game…
"We had a couple 95 yard drives, but we have to put them in. We have to finish. We have to do a better job as an offense. But look, it is a win. I can't think about it any other way. Good job to our offensive line. Good job to our running backs. Good job for this offense. Goof job for this
team."

On what has been the difference since the loss to Auburn…
"Togetherness - We came together and realized how talented we were. Things come together, then things start getting better. That's what has happened. Everything has come together and improved."

On how the offensive line has improved…
"I say since Florida and on, we played a lot better. We just keep on improving and keep being together. That's what we do at practice, in the games, in meetings. Everything is coming together as one. No one is going against each other. When things get bad, you can't fall back."
