Ole Miss Rifle Downs NC State And The Citadel

OXFORD, Miss. - In its first match since Nov. 12, the No. 6 nationally-ranked Ole Miss rifle team won a three-team match against No. 20 NC State and The Citadel by shooting a team aggregate of 4638 over the weekend at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center in Oxford.
"It's exciting to get this win," Rebels coach Valerie Boothe said. "We didn't quite get the team score we wanted, which is not going to help us out as much at home. We're going to keep pushing for that but we had some great contributions. Alivia Yeager came through for us in the clutch and of course, as always, Keely (Stankey) and Melissa (Quartarone) are usually at the top. It was just a good group effort."
The Rebels shot a 2293 smallbore score led by the sharp shooting of sophomore Melissa Quartarone, who shot a match-high 579.
Meanwhile Keely Stankey, the only senior on the Rebels roster, led all shooters with an air score of 592. As a team, the Rebels shot 2345 in the air.
"I was kind of disappointed in my smallbore score because in our practice match last week, I shot ten points higher than I did today," Stankey said. "But I shot what I expected I would in air rifle. I feel I could still add some points to my air score but I was happy with it. It's just that my smallbore could have been a lot better."
Yeager also had a productive weekend finishing second for the Rebels in both smallbore (573) and air rifle (585).
This weekend was the first match for the Rebels since Nov. 12 when they dropped a heartbreaking contest at No. 3 West Virginia.
Although the team had been in Oxford practicing for two straight weeks prior to this weekend's match, Boothe still felt her team was a bit rusty due to the long layoff between matches.
The Rebels will not face competition next weekend, but are set to return to action Jan. 28 and Jan. 29 in Charleston against the Wolfpack and Bulldogs again.
