CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Junior Haley Sanders fired a career-best 68 at Yeamans Hall Sunday, to lead the Rebels, who stand in 11th place after the first day of the Cougar Classic (presented by Piggly Wiggly).

Sanders is just two strokes back of individual leader Erica Popson of Tennessee--one of the top players in the nation.

"Haley Sanders kick started our season with a 68 today," said Ole Miss coach Michele Drinkard. "She played so well, hitting all 18 greens and making six birdies. Haley worked really hard this offseason, setting new standards for herself, and today was just the beginning for her."

As a team, Ole Miss finished with an 8-over par 296. LSU fired an 8-under 280 to lead the field. Florida sits in second at 284, North Carolina is third at 285 and North Carolina State and Alabama are tied for fourth at 287.

Senior Natalie Gleadall, the individual winner of last year's Cougar Classic, finished at 75 for the day. Junior Ericka Schneider also tallied a 75 in her first tournament as a Rebel. Senior Haley Millsap and freshman Taelor Rubin each posted a 78 in the opening round.

"Overall, I like our position," Drinkard said. "I thought the team looked great out there and was flowing with confidence. I would like to see us take care of the par 5's better tomorrow and roll a few more putts in."

Play continues with the second round tomorrow morning. Fans can access live scoring by going to www.olemisssports.com and clicking on the link.
