Rifle Concludes NCAA Qualifier

OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss women's rifle team posted a team aggregate score of 4588 at the NCAA Qualifier here Saturday at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center. Now the Rebels will wait to see if they will advance to the NCAA Championships in Ft. Benning, Ga. March 10-12.
Freshman Melissa Quartarone shot a team-high 584 in air rifle to pace the Rebels. Sophomore Kim Coffey was right behind with a 582. In small bore, Coffey had a 571 to lead the team, and junior Keely Stankey fired a 570.
"It was a difficult day for us," head coach Valerie Boothe said. "For some reason everyone struggled today. I know my team, and they will bounce back from this. We can't sit back; we have to prepare for conference championships [in two weeks].
The Rebels' score from the NCAA qualifying match will be averaged with the average of the Rebels' three highest marks of the season from different sites. The eight teams in the nation with the highest averages will then advance to the NCAA Championships Mar. 10-12. Ole Miss came into the weekend ranked No. 6 in the nation.
Ole Miss will host the Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships Feb. 25-27 at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center located on Sisk Ave. off Hwy. 7. This is the seventh-straight year the Rebels have hosted the GARC Championships, which includes conference members Army, Kentucky, Memphis, N.C. State, Nebraska, West Virginia and Xavier. Admission to the championships is free.
