DAHLONEGA, Ga. - Four members of the Ole Miss women's golf team concluded a fun week at the Achasta, by Reynolds, where they competed with 51 other two-person teams from various schools around the country in the inaugural National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) Hooters Women's Collegiate Team Championship.
Junior Ashley Lance and sophomore Haley Sanders tied for 16th with a total of 292 in the three-day event. After opening with a 77 in the alternate shot format, the duo came back to shoot 69 in the best ball and 146 in Thursday's aggregate team score.
For the four members of last year's NCAA Central Regional team, the experience was a new one.
"We had so much fun. It was a really interesting experience. It was different," Lance said. "We learned to be dependent on each other, because we were playing as a team. I learned a lot from her. We enjoyed the teams (Wisconsin, UC-Davis, Northwestern) that we played with each day. There was a lot of high-fives and joking around that you don't normally see in regular tournaments.
Senior Jillian Brodd and junior Haley Millsap tied for 25th with a 303 total. They shot 72 on the first two days of competition and then 150 in the team aggregate score.
"We had three different formats. The alternate shot felt weird, because of the format. It took us a little while to get used to it," Millsap said. "We did well together. We figured out how to work as a team. I felt like there was a little more pressure. If you hit a bad shot, it's affecting your team. It was really competitive. The scores went low.
Millsap said she would definitely play in the event again and enjoyed staying with a host family and getting to know them.
"Our host family didn't know a lot about golf, but we still had a lot of fun off the golf course," she said. "We got together with Haley (Sanders) and Ashley and their host family one night and grilled out."
"Our host family said if it's back there next year, they want us to stay with them again," Lance said. "Staying with a host family definitely made it a lot of fun."
Sanders will be in action next week at the prestigious U.S. Amateur Championships at the Charlotte Country Club in Charlotte, N.C.
