Gleadall Leads Rebel Golfers On Day One At Mercedes Benz

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Ole Miss women's golf team, led by junior Natalie Gleadall, shot a 291 in the first round of the Mercedes Benz Championship here Friday at Holston Hills Country Club and stands in a tie for second.

Gleadall continued her excellent play this fall, carding a 2-under 70 to tie for fourth, which included four birdies. The Ontario, Canada native is three back of the individual leader, Tennessee's Erica Popson.

Juniors Ashley Lance and Haley Millsap both shot 73 and are tied for 12th. Freshman Kathryn Fowler shot 75, and senior Jillian Brodd, a native of Knoxville, posted a 78, which didn't count in the final total.

"We had a fun day on the golf course today. We got off to a slow start then settled in to play some great golf," head coach Michele Drinkard said. "The defense on a Donald Ross course is the greens and we played them well. Strategy is very important, because the edges run off. A lot of times hitting the center of the green is the best play."

Tennessee turned in tournament record for lowest round with a 280 and leads Ole Miss and Arkansas by 11. TCU (293) and Kent State (294) round out the top five.
