DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Ole Miss women's golf team finished 2-2-1 against North Carolina in the final round of the consolation bracket at the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Tuesday and won as a result of the tiebreaker. The tiebreaker is based on how many holes each team wins, and Ole Miss won seven to UNC's four.
The Rebels rebounded from a disappointing start to the tournament, to post consecutive wins over Colorado and North Carolina to finish out match play 2-1 at the Legends Course at LPGA International.
"Our first tournament is in the books, and we learned a lot this week on where we need to focus our preparation for this next weekend at Yeamans Hall," head coach Michele Drinkard said. "We will take the day off tomorrow from golf and focus on our academics and then get in a solid practice on Thursday before we leave again on Friday.
"One area of our games that already has improved dramatically is our distant wedges as proof of Ashley Lance holing a shot from 94 yards today. Our new short game practice area that just opened up for us this fall is tremendous and is really going to pay dividends for us."
Senior Sara Grantham put the Rebels on the board when she downed Catherine O'Donnell 4 and 3 in the No. 1 match. Grantham birdied the par-4 fourth hole (her eighth hole) to go 5-up in the match and never looked back.
Sophomore Haley Millsap, who hails from Pace, Fla., had a solid two days in match play, winning all three of her matches to lead the Rebels. Against UNC, she handed Margaret Pentrack a 3 and 2 loss in the No. 3 match.
Freshman Haley Sanders lost 2-up to Courtney Gunter in the No. 2 match. Sanders was 2-down through nine against Gunter, until the Tarheel bogeyed No. 5 (their 10th hole) followed by a birdie from Sanders to square the match. Sanders would then take a 1-up lead with a birdie on 13. Unfortunately, the Rogers, Ark., native bogeyed two of her last four holes.
UNC's Sarah Thead beat Rebel sophomore Ashley Lance 2 and 1 to even the match at 2-2. The final match between Ole Miss junior Jillian Brodd and Jordan Allyne was halved.
The Rebels will be back in action this weekend at the Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C.
