Pair Of Rebels Competing In U.S. Amateur

8/3/2009 | Women's Golf

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Former Ole Miss women's golfer Dori Carter and rising senior Sara Grantham began competing in the prestigious U.S. Amateur Championship Monday at the Old Warson Country Club in St. Louis, Mo.

Carter teed off in the morning, and shot a three-over 74 on the par-71 course. The Valdosta, Ga., native was +2 after nine holes before finishing at 3-over. A two-time All-American at Ole Miss, Carter is tied for 33rd heading into Tuesday's second round.

Grantham didn't tee off until after 1:00 p.m., when the wind started blowing, making conditions more difficult and causing scores to rise. The Wilsonville, Ala., native was 3-over after nine holes (started on the back nine) before nearly holing it out on the 10th hole. Left with 2 inches for birdie, Grantham got it back to 2-over, where she remained through 14 holes of play. She bogeyed two of her last four holes to finish with the 75 and is tied for 47th.

Only six players in the field managed to do better then par, with Amy Anderson of North Dakota taking the lead at 3-under (68). Six players shot even par.

The low 64 scorers on Tuesday will advance to match play. The first round of match play is scheduled for Wednesday, the second and third rounds will be played Thursday, the quarterfinal matches are Friday, the semifinals are on Saturday, and the 36-hole championship final will be played Sunday.
