Grantham Advances In Match Play At Alabama State Am

ALEXANDER, Ala. - Ole Miss women's golfer Sara Grantham advanced to the second round of match play at the Alabama State Amateur Championship Wednesday, with a convincing 6 and 5 win over Julie Jehle here at the Willow Point Golf and Country Club.

Grantham, an upcoming senior for the Rebels, won the first two holes to go 2-up and never trailed. The defending champion held a 4-up lead through eight and finished 4-under through 13 holes of play.

"I played really well today. I had only one bogey (on No. 9) with five birdies. I hit a lot of good shots and made a lot of putts," Grantham said. "The goal in these tournaments is to play better each day, and I felt like I did that today."

The rising senior will now face a somewhat familiar opponent in the second round in Betsy Birchall, Thursday at 7:54 a.m.

"Because of the rain today, we had to play in foursomes, so I played with Betsy," Grantham said. "I've known Betsy for awhile, since I moved here (Alabama). I've played with her before. She'll be a freshman at William and Mary this fall."

Should Grantham win her second match, she would play again, in the semifinals, Thursday afternoon.
