OXFORD, Miss. - Punter Tyler Campbell and linebacker D.T. Shackelford were named to the SEC All-Freshman team as voted on by the league's coaches, it was announced on Thursday.
Campbell, a native of Little Rock, Ark., finished second in the SEC and 17th nationally in punting, averaging 43.6 yards per kick. A unanimous selection, Campbell notched eight punts of over 50 yards this season, including a long of 71 yards. He pinned 12 punts inside the opponent's 20-yard line and his current average would be the highest by an Ole Miss punter since 2003.
Shackelford, a native of Decatur, Ala., played in 10 games for the Rebels this season, recording 18 tackles and 2.0 TFLs. Shackelford picked off a pass against Southeastern Louisiana and returned it 58 yards for a touchdown. He posted a season-high seven stops against UAB and finished fourth in the SEC with four fumble recoveries.
Campbell, Alabama offensive lineman Barrett Jones, South Carolina receiver Alshon Jeffery and Vanderbilt placekicker Ryan Fowler were the only players to be a unanimous selection to the team. Vanderbilt's Warren Norman made the squad as both a running back and return specialist. He was named SEC Freshman of the Year and second team All-SEC earlier this week.
