11/30/2009 | Football

JACKSON, Miss. - Ole Miss senior running back/wide receiver Dexter McCluster was named the 2009 recipient of the Cellular South Conerly Trophy as the state's top collegiate football player, as announced Monday at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.

McCluster's selection marks the sixth time a Rebel has received the honor and first since 2006.

Named after former Ole Miss great Charlie Conerly, the Cellular South Conerly Trophy has been given every season since 1996. Former Rebel winners include Stewart Patridge (1997), Deuce McAllister (1999), Eli Manning (2001, 2003) and Patrick Willis (2006).

McCluster, a Largo, Fla. native, leads the Rebels and ranks fifth in the SEC with 985 rushing yards this year. He needs 15 more rushing yards and 25 more receiving yards to become the first player in SEC history with 1,000 rushing yards and 500 receiving yards in the same season.

• Set to become just the fourth Rebel all-time to rush for 1,000 yards in a season ... It would be the sixth 1,000-yard rushing season in school history.

• Ranks fifth in rushing in the SEC at 82.1 ypg ... His 10 total touchdowns accounted for leads the Rebels.

• Five plays of 50-plus yards, including a 79-yard run vs. Auburn that was the longest by a Rebel since 1999.

• Two-time SEC Player of the Week and National Player of the Week for Tennessee.

• Averaging 219.6 all-purpose yards and 164.2 rushing yards with eight TDs accounted for over last five SEC games ... Posted at least 145 all-purpose yards in each game.

• Posted school records of 282 rushing yards and 324 all-purpose yards against Tennessee ... His four rushing TDs tie four others for the second-most in school history.

• Became first Rebel with 100 rushing yards (123) and 100 receiving yards (137) in same game vs. Arkansas.

• Ranks second on the Ole Miss career all-purpose yardage list with 3,694.
