Women's Golf Finishes Tied For Fifth At Alamo
10/27/2009 | Women's Golf
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Ole Miss women's golf team concluded the fall with their second top-five finish, a tie for fifth at the rain-shortened Alamo Invitational. The first day of play was cancelled due to heavy rains in the San Antonio area.
The Rebels shot a 303 in the only round of the tournament, to tie with Wisconsin for fifth. Tenth-ranked Tennessee won the event with a 289. Notre Dame and Texas A&M tied for second at 292, and Nebraska finished fourth at 302.
Senior Sara Grantham led the Rebels with a 73 to tie for 10th. It marks her second top-10 finish of the year and seventh of her career. Grantham has been Ole Miss' top finisher in all four stroke-play events this fall.
"Sara played one of the most solid rounds of golf she has played all fall, hitting 15 greens, and added another top 10 to her record," head coach Michele Drinkard said. "Since I have been at Ole Miss Sara keeps winning my 'Most Improved' award. She keeps setting her bar higher and higher and puts in the work to reach her goals. It absolutely puts a smile on my face to see someone work that hard and attain her goals."
Junior Jillian Brodd and sophomore Haley Millsap both carded a 76 and tied for 22nd. Sophomore Ashley Lance posted a 78, and freshman Haley Sanders had a 79 to round out the Rebels.
"As a team we got off to a rocky start being 9-over par after the first three holes before we decided it was time to show up and play," Drinkard added. At that point we really played well and started making a lot of pars and rolled in some birdies too.
"To be competitive in the SEC this spring we are going to need to reduce our mistakes and start turning a bad shot or hole into par saves and good bogeys instead of being in the 'other stat' category."
The Rebels will have a few months off to work on individual areas of their games before returning to the links.
"The off period we have before Thanksgiving is my favorite time because I can really get in there with each player and help them. Coach (Alexis) Rather and I will help them to recognize through their stats and course management how they can improve and reduce their mistakes to save a few strokes and bottom line, lower their scores."
Ole Miss returns to the course March 1-2 at the Kinderlou Challenge in Valdosta, Ga.
