Grantham Leads Rebels On Day One Of Mercedes

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- In cooler temperatures and steady drizzle, senior Sara Grantham shot 74 in the first round of the Mercedes Benz Championship here Friday to lead the Ole Miss women's golf team at the Fox Den Country Club.
Grantham's round was good enough to place her in a tie for 14th. The Rebels as a team, did not fare as well in the opening round, shooting a 309 to tie for 13th among the 18-team field.
"Weather conditions were cooler with a constant drizzle throughout our round," head coach Michele Drinkard said. "Considering how much rain Knoxville has received the golf course was very scoreable today.
"Sara had a solid round in the weather conditions. She didn't strike the ball that well but missed in areas that she was able to get up and down. She really impresses me with her inner strength to do what ever it takes to score.
"The rest of our team is much better than we showed today. We look forward to seeing how they respond Saturday."
Host Tennessee shot a 5-under 283 and leads Kent State and Louisville (296) by 13 strokes. Chattanooga (300) is fourth and South Carolina and North Carolina State are tied for fifth at 302. Tennessee's Diana Cantu leads all individuals with a 3-under 69.
