Women's Golf Heads To Knoxville For Mercedes
10/15/2009 | Women's Golf
OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss women's golf team will head to Knoxville, Tenn., this weekend for the 13th annual Mercedes Benz Championship hosted by Tennessee at the Fox Den Country Club.
Another strong field will be assembled in Knoxville with eight of the 18 squads competing ranked in the Top 25, including No. 7 LSU, No. 12 Florida, No. 17 Chattanooga, No. 18 Tennessee, No. 19 Wake Forest, No. 20 Tulane, No. 22 Louisville and No. 24 South Carolina.
The Rebels have plenty of experience on the course, after earning fifth at last year's Mercedes Benz. Ole Miss will be led by senior Sara Grantham, who tied for fourth in the Rebels' last tournament (Johnie Imes).
Junior Jillian Brodd returns to her hometown where she finished tied for 19th a year ago at this event. Brodd tied for 12th at the Johnie Imes with a strong finish to earn her best showing as a Rebel.
Sophomore Haley Millsap also competed in last year's event. Senior Andrea Buccilla, whose career-best 73 in the final round of the Johnie Imes helped the Rebels finish fourth, will be making her third consecutive trip this year. Back in the lineup is sophomore and Tennessee native, Ashley Lance, who missed the last two tournaments with a stress fracture in her foot.
"This is our fourth of five tournaments this fall, and at each one we are making positive improvements," head coach Michele Drinkard said. "Sara is coming off a solid tournament in Missouri. You can see her energy, and the confidence she has is spreading over into the team.
"Playing at Fox Den feels like home, being Jillian's home course and also home to current teaching professional and Ole Miss golf alum Lori Cate. It is also nice to have Ashley back in the lineup. We are probably going to face a wet golf course this weekend with all the rain that is crossing over the southeast. Our rain suits and gloves will be put to good use."
The tournament begins Friday with 18 holes and concludes Sunday with the final 18. Live scoring will be available by going to www.OleMissSports.com and clicking on the link in the Rebel Hub.
