Carter Leads Lady Rebels On Day One Of Cougar Classic

9/14/2008 | Women's Golf

HANAHAN, S.C. The Ole Miss women’s golf team left too many shots on the green on their way to a 307 in the first round of the Cougar Classic at Yeaman’s Hall Sunday.  The Lady Rebels are currently in 17th heading into the second round.

“We played really well from tee to green today, and will build on that for tomorrow,” head coach Michele Drinkard said.  “The girls are in great spirits and realize that we let too many shots get away from us on the green.  We are looking forward to playing on Monday.”

Senior All-SEC Dori Carter led the team with a 2-over 74.  She eagled the par-5 7th and was 2-under heading into the back nine.  A triple bogey on the 15th, left her at +3, but she closed with a birdie for the 74.

Junior Sara Grantham carded a 3-over 75, which included a birdie on the par-4 10th.  In their first collegiate tournament, freshmen Haley Millsap and Kirsty Rands posted a 78 and 80 respectively to round out the team’s scoring for the day.

Virginia and Georgia both fired a 288 in the first round to sit atop the leaderboard at the Cougar Classic.  UGA’s Mallory Hetzel and Virginia’s Whitney Neuhauser both shot a 68 in the first round and are tied for the individual lead.

Monday’s second round is a fixed tee format and begins at 7:40 a.m.  The Lady Rebels start from hole #10 beginning at 7:40 a.m.
