VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, N.C. Dori Carter and Sara Grantham, of the Ole Miss women’s golf team, both won their opening-round matches at the North & South Amateur Championship in exciting fashion Wednesday at Pinehurst No. 2.

Carter, who will be a senior this year, defeated Ohio State junior Emma Jandel on the 19th hole.  The All-American was 3 down with 4 to play and squared the match on the 18th, before winning on the first extra hole.  Cater will play Sydney Crane (senior at North Carolina) Thursday in the second round.

Grantham, a rising junior, also had to come back in her match, falling 3 down after 4 holes.  She picked up her play and eventually won 2&1 against Martina Gavier, a sophomore for No. 15 ranked Kent State.  The 2008 Alabama State Amateur Champion will meet Cheyenne Woods in Thursday’s second round.  Woods is an incoming freshman for Wake Forest and the niece of 14-time major winner Tiger Woods.

“I am really proud of Sara and Dori winning their first round matches in such dramatic fashion,” head coach Michele Drinkard said.   “They both were very gritty and dug deep to fight back and win.  It shows how competitive they are and how much confidence they both have in their game.”

Both players will have to win two rounds Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals.
