OXFORD, Miss. The Ole Miss women’s golf team rides the momentum of its tournament win in Missouri last week to Knoxville, Tenn., this weekend for the Mercedes Benz Championship Oct. 10-12.
The Fox Den Country Club and the University of Tennessee will host the three-day event, which includes 18 teams. Of the 18 squads competing in this year’s tournament, four are ranked in the Golfweek poll top 20, including No. 9 Denver, No. 10 North Carolina, No. 18 LSU and No. 19 Louisville. Denver features the No. 2 player in the nation in the latest Golfweek individual rankings.
Ole Miss is coming off its first tournament title since 2004, capturing the Johnie Imes Invitational Sept. 26. Senior Dori Carter finished second in the tournament and is currently ranked No. 32 in the Golfweek rankings.
Carter will be joined by junior Sara Grantham, sophomore Jillian Brodd and freshmen Ashley Lance and Haley Millsap. Senior Rachel Ingram will compete as an individual.
“Winning at Missouri gave us the positive energy that we needed to believe in ourselves and helped to reaffirm that preparation does win championships,” head coach Michele Drinkard said. “In preparing for Knoxville we continued our maintenance drills that each has developed for themselves and then spent as much time as possible continuing to work on our short games. We look forward to riding the momentum we have created.”
