Dori Carter Ties For Fourth At Cougar Classic

9/11/2007 | Women's Golf

HANAHAN, S.C. Ole Miss junior Dori Carter turned in a career 54-hole tournament best 72-72-71215 to finish tied for fourth at the Cougar Classic Tuesday at the Yeaman’s Golf Club.

Carter earned her third top-five and seventh top-10 finishes of her career.  The Valdosta, Ga., native began the tournament in a tie for 18th after the first round, but made her way up the leader board with steady play.

After shooting even-par the first two days, Carter fired a one-under 71 Tuesday to land her second best finish in her career.  She tied for second twice last year.

The final round consisted of a shotgun start with Carter beginning her round on the 14th hole.  She came into the par-3 13th (her 18th hole) at even again, but birdied the 154-yarder to get in the three-way tie for fourth.

“We are really proud of Dori,” head coach Michele Drinkard said.  “She battled some windy conditions today and came away with five birdies to finish fourth in a strong field of competitors.”

Unfortunately, Carter was alone at the top, as her teammates could not keep pace.  The team finished 18th with a 306-311-308925.  Sophomore Sara Grantham finished with a 78-78-81237, junior Rachel Ingram posted a 79-80-79238, freshman Jillian Brodd turned in a 77-81-83241 and Katherine Jones carded a 90-81-77248.

“I saw some good improvement the last three days from the team, but we just didn’t quite come together for a good team score,” Drinkard said.  “We head back home for a couple of days to prepare for The University of Denver tournament next week.”

Notre Dame (870) edged Tennessee (871) by one stroke to claim the title.  Notre Dame’ Lisa Maunu (210) beat out teammate So-Hyun Park (213) by three strokes to win medalist honors.
