TUNICA, Miss. - With 18 holes in the books, Auburn holds a healthy eight-stroke lead with a one-over par team total of 291 after day one of the SEC Women's Golf Championship at the Tunica National Golf & Tennis Club. The second of the three tournament rounds will tee off Saturday at 8:30 a.m. CT.
A large group of the conference field is bunched together behind the No. 3 nationally-ranked Tigers, with five strokes separating second from seventh place. Tennessee carded an 11-over par 299 for second place, while Georgia and Arkansas are tied for third at 13-over. Alabama and LSU share the fifth spot with a 303 each.
Individually, Auburn's Nicole Hage heads the pack with a three-under-par 69, while Tennessee's Jessica Shepley sits two strokes behind the leader with a 71. Four players are tied for third at even par including UT junior Violeta Retamoza, who has finished second in her first two SEC Championships. Arkansas' Stacy Lewis, Florida's Whitney Myers and Alabama's Carina Sorensen also fired 72.
Tournament host Ole Miss is 11th after the first round, while Mississippi State is the trailing squad. The Lady Rebels are the host team for the first time since the 1994 tourney was staged in Jackson. This year's SEC Championship, the 25th-annual event, is making its Tunica debut and is taking place in Mississippi for only the third time ever.
