OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss signed Katherine Jones of Jackson, one of the top golfers in the state, to a national letter of intent to play golf for the Lady Rebels beginning in the 2004-05 academic year, head coach Meghan Bolger announced on Friday.

Jones is the first signee for Ole Miss this fall.

"We are really excited to have a player the caliber of Katherine Jones join our program," said Bolger. "Katherine is a tremendous athlete who will be a great asset to this program. We look forward to her playing for us and helping us achieve our goals of taking that next step on the national level, and within the Southeastern Conference."

Jones, a senior at Jackson Academy, claimed a second-place finish in the Jackson Academy Invitational in 2002. She was the only female in a field of 75, playing from the men's tees for the event.

Jones has racked up the accolades in her golfing career, claiming first place finishes at the 1998 Gulf States Carr Haskins Memorial, the 2001 SJGT LSU University Club Junior Classic, the 2001 Caroline Junior Invitational, the 2001 Gulf States Thanksgiving Classic, and the 2003 Gulf States Junior Championships.

She also claimed consecutive wins at the: SJGT Emerald Bay Junior Classic (2001, 2002), SJGT Carline Junior Classic (2001, 2002), Mississippi Girls Junior State Amateur (2001, 2002), and the Exxon BFI (2002, 2003). Jones was the Stanley Walters Saturday Medalist twice at the Exxon, while setting the tournament record for the same tournament when she finished 6-under par with a two-round score of 70-68-138. The score is also Jones' career-low for a 36-hole event.

Jones fired a personal best of 67 from the men's tees at Castlewoods Country Club. She has earned Player of the Month honors from the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour three times.
