FRANKLIN, Tenn. - A strong push from several young faces provided a big boost to the Ole Miss women's gold team, as it found itself in eighth place after the first day of competition at the Mason Rudolph Collegiate with a score of 310-309-619.
Sophomore Nikki Hadd led the team on the afternoon, while freshmen Sarah Kate Cousart and Laura Evans followed right behind to help push the team to the eighth place standing on the afternoon.
"I'm really excited about what we are doing," head coach Meghan Bolger said. "The team played very well and was steady all day. The young girls played well and I know Bernadette (Luse) and Kerrie (Davis) will come back strong for us tomorrow."
Hadd, a sophomore on the team, provided a show right off the bat, finishing the first whole chipping in for an eagle. She continued to play well throughout the afternoon, turning in a two round score of 74-78-152. The score put Hadd in a tie for 17th-place on the day and in the lead amongst Lady Rebels.
Cousart and Evans, the two freshmen on the squad, both turned in solid performances for the first two rounds of competition. Cousart carded a 77-76-153 on the day to finish tied for the 23rd-place spot. Evans, who found herself three-under-par with six holes to go, finished the day tied for 30th with a score of 78-76-154.
Seniors Kerrie Davis and Bernadette Luse followed in scoring, as Davis, who is competing as an individual, fired a 79-77-156 to tie for 40th. Luse turned in a two-round total of 81-79-160 to tie for 52nd overall.
Sophomore Brooke Hixon rounded out the scoring for the Lady Rebels with a score of 81-87-168 to tie for 74th overall after two rounds.
Bolger hopes the team will be able to get off to a good start in the final round on Wednesday and make some moves up in the standings in a field that features some of the nation's top teams.
"Hopefully we can get out there and have a good round tomorrow and make something happen as a team," Bolger said. "It would be a great thing for us to play strong and close out the tournament well. This is a long and difficult course, especially on a windy day like today, so we hope to make a move up with some of the best teams in the country."
The Lady Rebels will close out play in the final round of competition on Tuesday.
