OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss women's golf squad will host the 2000 Lady Rebel Intercollegiate at The University Golf Course here Friday through Sunday Sept. 22-24.
The 13-team field will include host Ole Miss, Arkansas State, Central Florida, New Orleans, Austin Peay, Montevallo, Murray State, Georgia State, Troy State, South Alabama, University of Mobile, Jackson State, and Jacksonville State.
"This is the sixth year to host the event," said Lady Rebel head coach Keil Purdom, who is in her 10th year at Ole Miss. "We are excited about hosting this event at our home course. The tournament field will be good competition for our team.
Leading the way for the Lady Rebels will be seniors Teresa Brown and Marci Kornegay. Brown, who is from Windemere, Fla., ranked second on the team with a 79.20 per round average in 1999-2000. Kornegay, who is from Savannah, Ga., ranked third on the team with an 80.13 per round average in 1999-2000.
"Marci is our captain and is a great leader for this team," said Purdon. "Our other senior, Teresa, knows what it takes to be competitive in this league."
The defending team champion is Arkansas and the defending individual champion is Chirstine Gaul from the College of Charleston. Ole Miss last won the tournament in 1998.
The University of Mississippi Golf Club will have a different look this year. New tee boxes have been constructed on all holes at the course.
"These new tee boxes will change the course visually and makes the course challenging," Purdon said. "I'm interested to see the reaction by the visiting players to the new tee boxes."
Following the Lady Rebel Intercollegiate, the Ole Miss women's golf team will participate in the Mercedes-Benz Women's Collegiate Championship in Knoxville, Tenn., on Oct. 15-17.
