OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss women's golf team will host the 1999 Lady Rebel Intercollegiate Friday through Sunday at the University Golf Course. The 5th-annual event grows to a three-day, 54-hole tournament this year for the first time. The Lady Rebel Intercollegiate is part of the Rolex Collegiate Tour.
Ole Miss, who has won the tournament two of its four years, anchors the 19-team field. Other participants include UAB, Arkansas, Arkansas-Little Rock, Arkansas State, Austin Peay, Central Florida, College of Charleston, Eastern Illinois, Georgia State, Jacksonville State, Mobile, Murray State, New Orleans, South Alabama, Southern Illinois, Southern Mississippi, Troy State and Winthrop.
"The field has gotten stronger," said head coach Keil Purdom. "The girls are definitely prepared to defend their title. We're looking forward to a great event."
The host Lady Rebels captured the title last season behind individual champion Megan Breen. Robyn Rinaldo and Marci Kornegay both finished in the top three in 1998 and return to take another shot this year.
Rinaldo, a senior from Dade City, Fla., is already near the top of every career record list at Ole Miss. A 1999 All-SEC first team selection, Rinaldo holds two career tournament titles with 11 top-ten finishes and seven in the top five.
Kornegay posted the best finish of her career at the last Lady Rebel Intercollegiate, placing second. A junior from Savannah, Ga., Kornegay has five career top 20 finishes, including a 16th-place performance at the Auburn Tiger-Derby Invitational on Sept. 20 and 21.
Also in the Lady Rebels' lineup will be Kim Tudor, who is off to a hot start. The sophomore from Winter Garden, Fla., led Ole Miss in its season-opener, placing seventh at the Auburn Invitational. It was the second career top 10 finish for Tudor who also ranked seventh at last year's Southeastern Conference Championships.
Others competing for Ole Miss, either in the lineup or as individuals, will be Teresa Brown, Elizabeth Hoffman, Allison Burrow and Roiann Boisture. Brown, a junior from Windermere, Fla., posted three top 20 finishes last year including a career-best 13th-place showing at the 1998 Lady Rebel Intercollegiate.
Hoffman, a sophomore-transfer from Texas Lutheran, and Burrow, a redshirt-freshman from Garland, Texas, both saw their first action with the Lady Rebels at the Auburn Invitational. Boisture, a redshirt-freshman from Princeton, Ky., will be making her collegiate debut.
