OXFORD, Miss. -- The Ole Miss women's golf team will begin its 1998-99 campaign this weekend at the Lady Seminole Invitational in Tallahassee, Fla., in hopes of repeating its successful 1997-98 season.

Last year, the Lady Rebels compiled a record-breaking year that ended with a trip to the NCAA East Regional in Durham, N.C., at the Duke Golf Club. It was the first NCAA appearance in the history of the program, which began play in the fall of 1986.

Ole Miss recorded 10 top 10 finishes in 11 tournaments last year, tying a school record from the 1992-93 and 1994-95 seasons, and broke the record for top five finishes with seven. The Lady Rebels set records for the lowest single-round score and lowest tournament total and ended

the season with a stroke average of 309.48, the lowest ever by an Ole Miss team.

Although the Lady Rebels lost two-time All-SEC performer Lauren Mellen and three other letterwinners from last year's team, head coach Keil Purdom is optimistic about the upcoming season.

"I am excited about getting our season started," Purdom said. "The girls have been working extremely hard, and they are looking forward to another successful year. We had a lot of fun last year, and we want to continue the tradition of playing in the NCAA Regional."

Returning for Ole Miss is Megan Breen, a senior from Longwood, Fla., and a three-time All-SEC performer. Breen led the Lady Rebels with a 76.62 stroke average last year and recorded four top five, five top 10 and nine top 20 finishes.

Also returning for the Lady Rebels is junior Robyn Rinaldo of Dade City, Fla. Rinaldo shot a 70-75-75--220 to capture medalist honors at the Lady Seminole Invitational last year and lead the Lady Rebels to a fifth-place finish.

Joining the team this year are freshmen Brooke Bendler of Salisbury, Md.; Allison Burrow of Garland, Texas; Lynn Ann Moretto of Englewood, Colo.; and Kim Tudor of Winter Garden, Fla.

Anna Kirchner, a senior from Spring, Texas; Marci Kornegay, a sophomore from Savannah, Ga.; and Teresa Brown, a sophomore from Windermere, Fla., will participate in the tournament this weekend along with Breen and Rinaldo.
