Tennis Competes in National Clay Court Championships

BALTIMORE, Md. - Fourth-seeded Agnes Muzamel and seventh-seeded Ivona Mihailova advanced to the second round of main draw singles at the T. Rowe Price National Clay Court Championships Thursday, while Muzamel and Courtenay Chapman and Mariana Eberle and Celeste Frey won their first round doubles matches. The Rebels failed to advance anyone past the first round in singles, but Martin Sjoqvist and Martin Selin did win their first-round doubles match.
Muzamel lost the first set to Wisconsin's Andrea Nathan 6-2, but stormed back to win the final two sets 6-0, 6-1. She will face Vanessa Castellano of Georgia in the second round Friday. The women's draw consists of 32 players. Mihailova defeated Jennifer Hall of Notre Dame 7-5, 6-4 to move into the second round where she will meet up with another Georgia player, Aarthi Venkatesan.
In women's doubles, second-seeded Muzamel and Chapman came back to beat Vanessa Pardo and Antonella Pozzi of Virginia Tech 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. They will play Martina Ondrejkova and Eva Puflerova from South Alabama in the second round. Eberle and Frey downed Nadine Rastettic and Yael Tobi of Pepperdine 6-1, 6-3.
In men's singles action, Martin Sjoqvist lost to Piotr Baranowski of Winthrop 6-1, 6-3; James Shortall fell to Dustin Mauck of SMU 6-2, 6-1 and Vikrant Chada dropped a 7-6(3), 6-2 decision to Ryan Sachire of Notre Dame.
Sjoqvist came back in the afternoon to team up with Selin for a 6-3, 6-1 doubles win over Ty Braswell and Dave Koslowski of Florida State. They will face the No. 1 seeded team of Paul Martin and Nick Crowell in the second round.
