Brian Simmons joined Ole Miss Athletics Health and Sport Performance staff in 2019 and serves as an athletics counselor.

Simmons is a Licensed Certified (Clinical) Social Worker, licensed in the state of Mississippi, and a member of the National Association of Social workers (NASW).

Simmons earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Social Work from the University of Mississippi and  specializes in Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse (AOD), Trauma, and other Mental Health disorders. He's worked in inpatient and outpatient AOD centers with both youth and adults, Mental Health Outpatient, Crisis Phone Line Coordination, and is an instructor in suicide prevention. He has also worked in assisted living, hospice, and with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

He is trained in the specialty areas of EMDR, Substance Use Disorders, group and individual therapy, and mindfulness/relaxation techniques. 

Simmons is originally from Kalamazoo, Michigan, and moved Oxford in 1995, courtesy of the Marine Corps who assigned him to Ole Miss as an ROTC instructor. He is a Retired Reconnaissance Marine Gunnery Sergeant; many of his friends still affectionately call him “Gunny”.

Simmons and his wife Anne have two married children, David and Naomi.
