Rally Attempt Comes Up Short as Volleyball Drops Heartbreaker to Washington
9/3/2026 | Volleyball
NORMAN, Okla. – Despite a valiant reverse sweep effort, the Ole Miss volleyball program came up just short, falling 3-2 to Washington, to conclude the 2026 Allstate Big Ten/SEC Challenge on Thursday afternoon.
Jorda Crook led the Rebels (3-2, 0-0 SEC) with 12 kills, 11 digs and matched a career-high with six blocks, while Cameron Bradley added 23 digs and three assists against the Huskies (4-0, 0-0 Big Ten). Nina Moorer also shined, tallying five kills and a career-high seven blocks.
Despite a pair of early blocks, both of which featured Moorer, the Rebels found themselves in an early hole that they were unable to recover from. Back-to-back 6-1 runs from the Huskies imperiled the early efforts of the Rebels, who slipped into an 18-8 deficit. Crook would find her rhythm late in the set, with four kills, but the Huskies comfortably took the opener, 25-14.
The Rebels used the added momentum from Crook to keep the second set much closer. Crook delivered a pair of early kills and two blocks to give the Rebels a narrow 12-11 lead. However, a 3-0 stretch into the media timeout changed the momentum in favor of the Huskies, who managed to hold onto a narrow lead for the remainder of the set. The Rebels were able to score in unconventional ways, with an ace from Moorer, and kills from Tenesyn Frye and Bradley, but the Huskies built enough of a gap to pull away for a 25-22 set win.
With their backs against the wall, the Rebels faced an early 4-1 deficit, but methodically pushed back into the set. Melia Johnson provided a jolt with a pair of kills, while strong serving from Bella Bonanno helped the Rebels jump back in front, 9-8. The two sides traded points from there, until back-to-back blocks from the Rebels, including a solo block from Frye helped the Rebels take a 22-19 lead. The Huskies immediately responded with a 5-0 run to earn multiple match points. The Rebels did not go away though, forcing an error and adding a kill by Johnson to save the match points and tie it at 24-24. A solo block by Moorer would give the Rebels set point, but the Huskies saved that. Moorer delivered a kill on the next play for a second set point, but the Huskies saved it again. A pair of errors would doom the Huskies from there, as the Rebels emerged with the 28-26 win.
With momentum now in favor of the Rebels, a key 5-0 run on Bradley's serve helped the Rebels pull ahead early in the fourth. The offense turned in its most efficient set of the day, hitting .256 while upgrading the defensive intensity to keep Washington at arm's length. Each time the Huskies appeared to generate momentum, the Rebels came up with huge swings, mostly off the hands of Shayla Meyer and Johnson. With both teams trading points into the home stretch, head coach Bre Henry called on Rileigh Butler to make her collegiate debut and serve. Butler delivered a strong serve, before registering her first collegiate assist later in the point on a big swing by Meyer to set up set points at 24-21. The Rebels used all three, finally converting to secure the set on a rare kill by Bradley, winning 25-23.
However, the Huskies regrouped heading into the fifth set, building a quick 4-1 advantage and winning a fifth set challenge to stifle a Rebel response. Ryea Jackson delivered some energy in response, tallying a kill and a block, but the Huskies put together a decisive 8-0 run to bury the Rebels comeback attempt, winning the final set 15-5.
The Rebels head home to open a three-match swing, beginning by hosting the Rebel Volleyball Classic. The Rebels will host Southern Miss and Central Arkansas, beginning with a Saturday night matchup against Southern Miss at 6 p.m. CT. The match will be streamed via SEC Network Plus.
