Volleyball Drops Match Against Grand Canyon

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Ole Miss volleyball program struck for the opening set, but could not hang on, falling 3-1 to Grand Canyon in the finale of the Jayhawk Classic on Saturday afternoon at the Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena.
Shayla Meyer paced the Rebels (6-5, 0-0 SEC) offense with 14 kills and 12 digs for a double-double. Jorda Crook added 11 kills and six digs, while Melia Johnson tallied a double-double of 10 kills and 10 digs. Freshman Ryea Jackson shined, recording a career-high 10 kills on .750 hitting, while adding two blocks against the Lopes (6-4, 0-0 MWC).
Saturday opened with a bang for the Rebels who quickly surged out in front of the Lopes. The balanced Rebel offense opened with an 11-4 advantage, as Crook and Meyer helped deliver key early swings. The Rebels also found considerable success setting the middle, feeding Carly Paugh and Jackson to take a 15-10 lead into the technical timeout. The lead would balloon from there, as the Rebels delivered a commanding 6-0 run to pull away for good. Back-to-back kills from Crook helped the Rebels finish the set with a .375 hitting percentage and 25-16 win.
Grand Canyon would open the second set with a quick 5-1 run, forcing a Rebel timeout. From there, the Rebels settled down, keeping the score line similar, as Meyer added three kills to go into the technical timeout, down 15-10. The GCU lead expanded out of the timeout to as high as eight, but the Rebels fought valiantly to chip it away with a 6-2 run on the back of Melia Johnson to make it 23-19. However, the Lopes managed to hang on, taking the set 25-20.
The Rebels found themselves in a deep hole to begin the third set, as the Lopes offense delivered a 7-0 run en route to a commanding 17-7 lead. Jaidyn Hartsfield provided some needed energy to the Rebels off the bench, tallying a pair of kills and an ace, but the Rebels struggled to chip away at the large deficit. In the end, the Lopes took the third set, 25-14.
The fourth set opened up slowly, with Grand Canyon taking a 12-7 lead. However, the Rebels did not quit, chipping away at the Lopes lead. Crook added two more kills, followed by several key swings from Meyer and Jackson and the Rebels managed to rally to tie the match at 18-18. After a Paugh kill, the Lopes managed to pull away with a 3-0 run that would give them the cushion needed to eventually win, 25-22.
The Rebels are back in action on Sunday, September 27, opening SEC play at Alabama. The match is set for 2 p.m. CT and will be televised on the SEC Network.
