Volleyball Drops Road Match at Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Despite a big night from Jorda Crook, the Ole Miss volleyball program fell, 3-1, at Memphis on Tuesday night at Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
Crook led the Rebels (6-3, 0-0 SEC) with 18 kills, nine digs and five blocks, but the team would ultimately come up short against the Tigers (3-6, 0-0 American).
After trading points early in the match, the Rebel offense took over and built a large early advantage. The Rebels hit .344 in the frame, breaking away with a 6-0 run to take a 7-3 advantage. The Rebel offense was balanced, led by five kills apiece from Crook and Melia Johnson, but lead expanded as the Rebels took advantage of the Tigers defense. Vivianna Samaniego delivered a key run of serve to balloon the lead to 17-7. From there, Shayla Meyer and Crook added aces as the Rebels took the first set, 25-13.
However, the tide began to turn in the hosts favor in the second set. Despite taking an early 8-7 lead, the Tigers delivered a huge response, going on a 9-0 run to take a commanding 16-8 lead. A 5-1 stretch that included a triple block from the Rebels helped get the match back to 21-17, but the Tigers battled to finish off the set, 25-18.
Crook led the Rebels to a better start in the third set, with three kills to take a 10-7 lead. However, the Tigers battled back, taking a 15-14 lead into the media timeout. After a Memphis service error made it 17-16, the Tigers came out of the gate with energy, delivering a massive 8-0 run to seal the set in their favor.
Jaidyn Hartsfield came off the bench in the fourth set to provide some energy, as the Rebels surged to a 6-3 lead behind four kills and a block from the freshman. The Rebels were able to maintain the advantage with a 12-9 lead, before Memphis started to chip away. The Tigers rallied to take the lead at 17-16 and carried that momentum late in the set, earning several match points at 24-20. The Rebels would not give in though, rattling off four straight points to tie the match at 24-24 behind a kill and two blocks from Crook. Memphis earned their fifth and sixth match points from there, but the Rebels saved both and a Nina Moorer kill gave Ole Miss a chance to force a fifth set up 27-26. However, back-to-back Memphis kills swayed the momentum across the net and while the Rebels saved a seventh match point, they could not save the eighth, falling 30-28.
The Rebels continue the road swing on Friday night, opening up the Jayhawk Classic in Lawrence, Kan., The Rebels open the event against No. 22 Kansas in a 6 p.m. CT clash that is streamed on ESPN Plus.
