Offense Soars in Softball’s Win Over Southern Miss

OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss softball program exploded for 12 runs on 11 hits to defeat Southern Miss, 12-5, on Tuesday night at the Ole Miss Softball Stadium.
The Rebels (28-12, 2-16 SEC) launched four home runs including two from Madi George, who went 3-for-3 with two home runs, a double and an intentional walk. Lilly Whitten delivered 3.1 innings of one-hit relief to earn the win, striking out three Golden Eagles (30-20, 11-7 Sun Belt).
While the Rebels faced early adversity with two runs in the first inning by Southern Miss, the team quickly responded. The Rebels opened its half of the frame with five consecutive hits and six straight players reaching base.
Persy Llamas started the run-scoring with an RBI single, before George doubled home an additional run to make it 2-2. For good measure, Cassie Reasner cleared the bases with a three-run home run to make it 5-2.
George got right back to work in the second inning, making the Golden Eagles pay for a hit-by-pitch to blast a two-run home run and make it 7-2.
In the third inning, the Rebels did it again, as Laylonna Applin teed off for a solo home run to make it 8-2. While Southern Miss clawed back three runs on a home run of its own and an error in the fourth inning, the Rebels immediately responded with a solo home run from George to make it 9-5.
Whitten kept the Golden Eagles in check from there, while the Rebel offense continued to surge. The Rebels made Southern Miss pay for a Llamas single and intentional walk to George, as Reasner laced an RBI double in the next at-bat to make it 10-2. From there, Rachel Connors tacked on a run with a sacrifice fly and the Rebels scored an additional run on the play via an error to make it 12-5.
While the Rebels fell one run short of securing a run rule, Whitten secured the result and punctuated the final inning with a strikeout to end the game.
The Rebels return to SEC play this weekend, traveling to open up a three-game swing at Auburn. Game one is set for Friday at 6 p.m. CT and the opener will be streamed via SEC Network Plus.
