Softball Falls in 10-9 Thriller to No. 13 Texas A&M
4/12/2026 | Softball
The Rebels (26-18, 2-13 SEC) scored eight runs over the last three innings, but were unable to hold off the Aggies (30-12, 11-4 SEC) offense, who allowed the Rebels no closer than one run away after taking the lead in the third inning.
On a day that featured 19 runs and 25 hits between the two teams, the game started slowly, with scoreless frames from each side. However, the Aggies managed to tack on an RBI single to break the ice. Nevertheless, Rachel Connors quickly erased the Aggie lead with a solo home run to tie the game at 1-1.
Texas A&M retook the lead in the third inning on a KK Dement grand slam to lead 5-1. Dement followed it up in the fifth inning with another two-run home run and the visitors built a 7-1 lead.
Having recovered from a four-run deficit in game two to tie the game, the Rebels did not let the six-run lead deter the offense. The Rebels tallied four hits in the bottom of the fifth after Laylonna Applin led off the inning with a walk. A Ryan Starr double put two runners in scoring position for Taylor Malvin, who drove in a run with an RBI single to make it 7-2.
Mackenzie Pickens kept the offense rolling with a two RBI single up the middle to cut the lead to 7-4. From there, Persy Llamas stepped to the plate and blasted a two-run home run to make it 7-6 and force the Aggies into a pitching change.
A three-run Aggie home run in the sixth inning appeared to doom the Rebels, but the hosts would not quit and fought back. A walk by Connors and singles from Applin and Starr loaded the bases with no outs. Kennedy Bunker drove in a run with a sacrifice fly before Applin scampered home on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 10-8.
After a scoreless inning of relief from Lilly Whitten, the Rebels made one final push. Llamas led off the frame with a single and was pinch run for by Cassidy Patterson. Patterson advanced to second on a wild pitch, before Madi George singled up the middle to put the tying run on first base. The Aggies would get the first out, but Tenly Grisham came off the bench to tally an RBI single in her first at-bat of the day and cut the lead to 10-9. However, Texas A&M managed to secure back-to-back strikeouts to salvage the win.
The Rebels wrap up the homestand on Tuesday, hosting North Alabama for a 6 p.m. CT contest. The game will be streamed via SEC Network Plus.
