No. 3 Men’s Golf Incredible Run Ends in Semifinals at NCAA Championships

5/28/2025 | Men's Golf

CARLSBAD, Calif. – The No. 3 Ole Miss men's golf team's historic season came to a close Tuesday night in the semifinals of the NCAA Championships at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa, in Carlsbad, California. The No. 8 seeded Rebels fell to No. 4 Oklahoma State 3-2 in match play.

Much like the quarterfinal match against Arizona State, the battle between the Rebels and Cowboys ended in dramatic fashion.

Fellow Haskins Award finalist Preston Stout defeated Michael La Sasso 5&4 to secure the first semifinal point for the Cowboys.

Kye Meeks would get Ole Miss on the board, defeating Gaven Lane 4&2 to even the match at 1-1. Meeks was outstanding Tuesday for the Rebels winning both his quarterfinal and semifinal matches.

Tom Fischer took down Oklahoma State's Ethan Fang in an 18-hole thriller to put Ole Miss up 2-1. After both players hit errant tee shots, Fischer managed to scramble and converted a long two-putt for par to secure the point, winning 1UP.

Cameron Tankersley came all the way back from being three down through seven holes to force a playoff against Filip Fahlberg-Johnsson. Both players would bogey the first playoff hole, sending the match back to the 17th. Tankersley's approach found the bunker and Fahlberg-Johnsson nestled one up to about four feet for birdie. Tankersley would nearly hole his bunker shot and tapped in for par. Fahlberg-Johnsson would make birdie to win 1UP, evening the match at 2-2.

That left one match out on the course between Cohen Trolio and Oklahoma State's Eric Lee.

Trolio's match had been all square since the 14th hole, and it remained that way as the two stepped towards the 18th. Both players striped their tee shots into the middle of the fairway. Trolio's approach landed right of the green while Lee stuck a three wood to six feet for a chance to end the match.

Trolio would chip to about 5 feet opening the door for Lee to send the Cowboys to the finals. His eagle attempt slid by the hole, giving Trolio a chance to send the match to another playoff. He would bury the five-footer for birdie, declaring extra golf again for the Rebels.

On the first playoff hole, both players found themselves above the hole, putting back downhill on the par 3 16th. Trolio would make bogey as Lee had roughly six feet again to punch Oklahoma State's ticket to the championship match. Lee would not be denied this time as he made the par putt sending Oklahoma State to the finals against Viriginia.

The 3rd place finish at the NCAA Championship ties the best finish by an Ole Miss team in program history. The Rebels finished 4th in the 1985 Championship which included only four rounds of stroke play. The match play appearance marked the first in program history for the Rebels, whose previous best finish since the format began in 2009 was 14th back in 2022. It marked the second straight year the No. 8 seed took down the top seed in the quarterfinals. Last year, No. 8 Georgia Tech posted a 3-1 win over No. 1 seed Illinois.
