No. 3 Men’s Golf Advances to Semifinals with Epic Match Play Win Over No. 5 Arizona State

5/27/2025 | Men's Golf

CARLSBAD, Calif. – Tom Fischer's incredible comeback victory in 21 holes over the nation's No. 28 ranked golfer, Michael Mjaaseth, sent No. 3 Ole Miss men's golf to the semifinals of the NCAA Championships for the first time in program history.

The Rebels appeared in match play at NCAAs for the first time ever on Tuesday. As the No. 8 seed, Chris Malloy's squad triumphed over the stroke play winner and top seed for match play, Arizona State, defeating the No. 5-ranked Sun Devils 3-2. The newly crowned NCAA Individual Champion Michael La Sasso picked up right where he left off, turning in a dominant win 6&5 over top-10 stroke play finisher Preston Summerhays. La Sasso sat 6-under through 13 holes to clinch a quick point. Kye Meeks added the second point to the board for Ole Miss, defeating the No. 10 ranked golfer in the nation and a top-five stroke play finisher in Josele Ballester. Ballester took the lead on the twosome's first hole, No. 10, then Meeks tied it with a birdie on No. 11 and never trailed from then on, winning 2&1. Pogsapak Laopakdee defeated Ole Miss' Cameron Tankersley, 4&3, and Cohen Trolio fell 3&2 to another top-10 stroke play finisher, Connor Williams, setting up an epic finish by Fischer.

Mjaaseth carded three early birdies to take a four-hole lead just seven holes into the match and still led by three holes with five to play when Fischer made his epic comeback, making birdie on No. 5 and No. 8 to tie the match with one hole to go and force a playoff. The playoff appeared to break Fischer's way immediately when Mjaaseth's drive on the 19th hole of the match found the bunker, but he made a strong recovery out of the sand then holed out for birdie with an outstanding chip from 40 yards out, but Fischer answered. The junior from Birmingham, Alabama, stepped up and sank a 20-foot birdie putt to keep the match alive. The two traded pars on their 20th hole, then Mjaaseth's drive on their 21st found the rough, as did his second shot. Fischer nearly made a 30-footer for birdie to end the match outright but settled for par, putting the pressure on Mjaaseth, who narrowly missed a short par putt to give the match to the Rebels. Ole Miss advances to the semifinals later Tuesday afternoon, where it'll face No. 2 Oklahoma State, who defeated Oklahoma 3.5-1.5 in its quarterfinal match. The winner will meet the winner of Florida and Virginia for the NCAA Championship on Wednesday.
