Track & Field Wraps Tom Jones Memorial with Excellent Day
4/19/2025 | Track and Field
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Ole Miss track & field received several more strong performances, particularly in the hammer throw competitions, to conclude a busy weekend of action at Florida's Tom Jones Memorial on Saturday.
Less than 24 hours removed from his powerful outdoor debut in the shot put, three-time national champion and junior Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan put together a bombastic open in the hammer for the 2025 season. The Bowerman watch list member led wire-to-wire, from his opening heave of 73.99m/242-9 to his sixth-round winning effort of 74.54m/244-7 – which tied his own school record from last summer's U.S. Olympic Trials.
That opening mark for Robinson-O'Hagan currently ranks fourth both collegiately and in the United States at-large for 2025, and it puts the Rebel junior back in position as one of the world's premier combination shot/hammer throwers. Robinson-O'Hagan is the lone collegian at 68 feet in the shot and 240 in the hammer this outdoor season, and worldwide he stands alongside professional Jordan Geist as the lone throwers to break those distances this year. As a sophomore last season, Robinson-O'Hagan and Geist were also the lone throwers in the world at 21 meters in the shot and 74 in the hammer.
His teammate and reigning SEC silver medalist, senior Jake Dalton, had a career-day as well as the runner-up. Dalton unleashed a four-foot PR of 69.72m/228-9 for second in the invitational section behind Robinson-O'Hagan – which moves Dalton to third in school history in addition to 10th in the NCAA this season.
The Ole Miss women received an impressive performance of their own in the hammer invitational, courtesy of All-American sophomore Akaoma Odeluga.
The Munster, Indiana native unleashed a massive 12-foot PR of 65.33m/214-4 to finish fourth in a stacked field that included U.S. Olympian Annette Echikunwoke. Odeluga set PRs on both her second and fourth attempts on the day, with that 65.33m/214-4 coming in the fourth round.
That toss moves her to fifth in school history and 18th in the NCAA this season, but it also puts Odeluga into even more rarefied company in collegiate history. Combined with her NCAA-leading shot put career-best 18.93m/62-01.25 from last month's Battle on the Bayou, Odeluga ranks as one of only two in collegiate history to break 210 feet in the hammer and 62 feet in the shot put outdoors – standing alongside former Arizona State national champion Maggie Ewen. This season, Odeluga is the lone thrower in the world simultaneously at each of those distances.
Fellow sophomore Skylar Soli was also in the hammer invitational, taking seventh place at 61.82m/202-10.
On the track, junior Joseph Michel blazed the fastest all-conditions 100-meter dash at Ole Miss since 2013 after a superb outing in the men's invitational section. Michel finished eighth overall at a slightly windy 10.10 (+2.6), an all-conditions PR that moves him to No. 2 in Ole Miss history (which allows up to the NCAA qualifying standard 4.0 meters per second wind reading) behind Olympian Isiah Young's excellent senior season in 2013.
Michel had an excellent weekend, running a wind-legal PR into a headwind in the 200-meter dash on Friday at 20.91 (-1.5), while also running the leadoff leg of Ole Miss' 4x100-meter relay on Saturday alongside teammates Jordan Urrutia, Wesley Todd and Tarique Wright that ran 39.88.
In the open race, Urrutia clocked a wind-aided 10.33 (+4.0) in his first collegiate 100-meter dash.
Ole Miss' middle-distance specialists had a fantastic day of racing as well in the men's 800-meter invite. Freshman Max Armstrong and junior Carson Turner both ran career-bests and crossed the line at virtually the same time in the second heat, with Armstrong eclipsing Turner by one one-hundredth of a second, 1:47.68 to 1:47.69. Those times vault the Rebel duo into 12th and 13th, respectively, in Ole Miss history outdoors.
The Rebels had a handful of other notable performances in the field events. Freshman Lily Beattie improved yet again, tying for fifth in the invitational section of the women's pole vault at an outdoor PR of 4.10m/13-05.25, which ranks her sixth all-time at Ole Miss outdoors. Senior Dieusi Armand leapt a wind-legal season-best in the women's triple jump, finishing sixth at 12.57m/41-1 (+0.1). And All-American sophomore Mensi Stiff was the runner-up in the shot put Saturday at 16.41m/53-10.25.
Ole Miss will have next week off before its final meet of the regular season, the LSU Invite, down in Baton Rouge on May 3.
