Volleyball Fights for SEC Tournament Placement in Match at South Carolina

11/11/2025 | Volleyball

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Ole Miss volleyball program is set for the final road match of the regular season, making the trip east to face South Carolina on Wednesday at 6 p.m. CT.

The Rebels (12-12, 4-9 SEC) hold a one-match advantage on the Gamecocks (9-14, 3-10 SEC) to set up a critical clash in the SEC Tournament seeding push. The match will be streamed via SEC Network Plus.

RALLY POINTS
  • The Rebels are set for the final non-conference road match of the season, traveling to South Carolina on Wednesday.
  • The Rebels, who earned a sweep of Georgia on Friday, notched their first sweep since a sweep of South Carolina last season in Columbia. The Rebels have won five of the last seven against South Carolina.
  • Junior Gabi Placide continues to make a push for All-SEC honors, ranking second in the SEC in kills (427) and second in points (491.5).
  • Cammy Niesen, the program's all-time digs leader entered the top-10 in SEC history at LSU and continue her climb up the leaderboard, needing 18 digs for sole possession of ninth all-time.
  • Niesen was particularly impactful last week, tallying 19 digs and six assists en route to SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
  • Mokihana Tufono is closing in on back-to-back 1,000-assist seasons, standing at 956 entering play on Wednesday. She would be the first Rebel in nine years to accomplish the feat.
SERIES HISTORY
  • Ole Miss and South Carolina are set to face off on the volleyball court for the 54th time, with the Gamecocks leading the overall series, 30-23. However, Ole Miss has won five of the last seven matchups, which includes two sweeps.
  • One of those sweeps came last season in Columbia, which was Ole Miss' first sweep on the road against South Carolina since 2017. A balanced effort on both ends of the court prompted the victory with Shayla Meyer leading the charge with 10 kills and eight assists. Mokihana Tufono had a double-double with 31 assists and 10 digs, while Cammy Niesen's 16 digs led the entire field in the category.
  • Ole Miss athletes have historically had standout performances against South Carolina, most notably of which is Katie Kramer's 28 kills against the Gamecocks in 2007. That mark tied the single match rally scoring to 30 era record. Additionally, Aly Borelis lit up South Carolina with 62 assists in 2023, the second-most in a single match during the rally scoring era.
LAST TIME OUT
The Rebels delivered a complete performance, earning a 3-0 sweep of Georgia in Athens for the first time since 2008. Gabi Placide paced the offense, recording the highest hitting percentage of career in SEC play at .324, tallying 18 kills and 8 digs. Mokihana Tufono also shined, exploding for 42 assists, as well as seven digs, three kills, three aces and one block. Cammy Niesen proved to be a stalwart on defense, notching 19 digs and six assists, as the Rebels held Georgia to its second lowest kill output of the season at just 26 for the match.

CAN YOU DIG IT?
Senior libero Cammy Niesen has made history all-season smashing the program's all-eras dig record that stood for 14 years (by Morgan Springer). The 2024 SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year has been a model of consistency her entire career and is now poised to add to her all-time lead as SEC play continues.

Niesen has quietly emerged as one of the best liberos in the SEC over her dynamic career and has now entered the SEC top-10 all-time. Niesen is 18 digs away from sole possession of ninth all-time.

Last season, Niesen led the SEC in total digs with 537, which also ranked 33rd in the nation. This season, Niesen continues to impact the game, ranking second in the SEC in digs per set (4.23). Niesen took home SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors on Nov. 10 behind those efforts.

In fact, Niesen ranks fifth in the NCAA on the active digs leaderboard with 1,784.

AT EASE WITH PLACIDE
Gabi Placide has become the SEC's breakout star since arriving in Oxford this season and will be a critical part of the Rebels lineup as SEC play continues.

Placide has surged to the forefront of the national rankings, ranking second in the SEC with 491.5 points and second with 427 kills, while ranking 12th and 13th nationally in each. The Centennial, Colo., native also ranks ninth nationally in points per set and 13th nationally in kills per set.

Her efforts earned her a mid-season addition to the AVCA's Player of the Year Watch List. Placide also recently took home SEC Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors following back-to-back career-highs in wins over Texas Tech and UAlbany. Placide has carried that play into SEC action, recording a career-high 28 kills in a win over Alabama and hitting over .300 with 18 kills in a sweep at Georgia.

MOKI MAGIC
Setter Mokihana Tufono was named to the All-SEC Preseason Team after a dynamic junior season and has only elevated her game in year two as a Rebel. Tufono continues to be a bright spot, leading the SEC in total assists at 956 and ranking 23rd nationally. Tufono is seeking to become the first Rebel to record back-to-back 1,000 assist seasons in nine years.

Tufono has also been the catalyst for Gabi Placide's breakout campaign as a pin and has recorded four, 50-assist matches this season. Additionally, Tufono has taken strides on the defensive end, recording the first 40-assist, 20-dig match of her career at Mississippi State, exploding for 47 assists and a career-high 22 digs. Tufono added to that with a second 40-20 performance in a victory over Alabama.

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS
Throughout the entirety of the 2025 season, Ole Miss athletics and the volleyball program will honor and recognize many who have contributed to the success and legacy of the program over 50 years of volleyball.

The program has tallied over 800 wins, reached five NCAA Tournaments and won the 2017 NIVC championship. Nineteen student-athletes have earned All-SEC honors, 16 have earned AVCA All-Region and three have been named All-Americans as the program has blossomed over generations of standout student-athletes.

The success of the program has built on the foundation of countless student-athletes who have gone on to earn a degree from the University of Mississippi and take their talents throughout the world.

CLIMBING THE LADDER
Several Rebels are poised to etch their names in the all-time record books in 2025 across multiple different metrics.

In addition to clinching the all-eras digs record at Ole Miss, Cammy Niesen is also poised to enter the top-10 all-time in service aces, with 68 in her career. That stands just three outside the rally scoring era's top-10. Shayla Meyer has moved into the rally scoring era top-10 with 71 in her career. Meyer needs just one more ace for sole possession of ninth.

Mokihana Tufono continues her rapid ascent of the assists charts in her short time at Ole Miss. Tufono currently sits fifth all-time in the rally scoring era with 2,129 and ninth across all eras, despite only playing just 52 matches as a Rebel.
