Track & Field Improves Shot Put National Leads to Conclude Split Weekend

1/11/2025 | Track and Field

LOUISVILLE, Ky. / NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Ole Miss track & field padded its lead atop the national leaderboards in both the men's and women's shot put to cap a strong return to action across a split weekend at Kentucky's Rod McCravy Invitational and Vanderbilt's Commodore Challenge on Saturday.

Sophomore Akaoma Odeluga already owned the national lead on her season-opening performance from December, but on Saturday she cemented herself as one of the best women's shot putters in Ole Miss history. Odeluga won after unleashing an overall career-best of nearly one foot at 18.37m/60-03.25, an early season world and collegiate lead for 2025 that makes her one of three 60-footers in Ole Miss history indoors behind Olympian Raven Saunders (19.56m/64-02.25) and All-American shot putter Jalani Davis (18.61m/61-00.75).

Odeluga's performance today also launches her into the upper echelon of the event in collegiate history, pushing her to the No. 20 slot all-time. Odeluga joins Saunders (No. 2) and Davis (No. 12) on the all-time top-20 list, making Ole Miss the lone school with three top-20 performers.

Fellow sophomore and 2024 second-team All-American Mensi Stiff debuted on Saturday with a fourth-place finish at 16.55m/54-03.75, currently putting her ninth in the nation.

Junior Bowerman watch list member and reigning NCAA shot put champion Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan extended his lead atop the Division I charts on Saturday, winning the men's shot in convincing fashion at a season-best 20.51m/67-03.50. That heave currently ranks No. 2 in the world, and it is the furthest throw this early into the collegiate season (Jan. 11) in available records since at least 2008.

Fellow junior Mason Hickel took third place, topping out at 17.69m/58-00.50.

Ole Miss also received a highly ranked performance from senior Iangelo Atkinstall-Daley in the men's triple jump, leaping a season-best 15.49m/50-10 that currently ranks second in the SEC and ninth in the NCAA. Fellow senior Gavin Nembhard (seventh, 14.86m/48-9) and sophomore Mikoy Holmes (eighth, 14.51m/47-07.25) each recorded indoor career-bests and joined Atkinstall-Daley in the final.

Senior Kyla McLaurin had a season-best performance of her own in the women's edition of the triple jump, finishing eighth at 12.03m/39-05.75. Senior transfer Dieusi Armand fell one centimeter shy of joining McLaurin in the final, finishing tied for 10th at an Ole Miss best of 11.91m/39-1 – which improves upon her place at No. 15 in school history indoors.

In the men's pole vault, sophomore transfer and Oxford native John Kendricks had his best day yet as a Rebel, finishing tied for second at 5.17m/16-11.50 that ranks him 10th in Ole Miss history indoors. Junior Logan Kelley finished fifth overall at the same height.

On the track at Kentucky, freshman Tarique Wright clocked a personal best for the second straight day in the 60-meter dash, finishing 13th overall in Saturday's semifinal at 6.90.

At Vanderbilt, the Ole Miss distance runners notched seven top-five finishes, including a win in the women's 5K by Hannah Ielfield at 17:20.67.

Other top-five performances came courtesy of: Jonathan Stock (third, 1:53.35) and Cole Piotrowski (fourth, 1:54.80) in the men's 800-meter; Aidan Hodge (fourth, 2:25.78; PR) in the men's 1000-meter; Zack Gilbertson (fourth, 4:12.96) in the men's mile; Samuel Ferguson (fifth, 8:30.84) in the men's 3K; and the men's 4x400-meter relay of Jonathan Stock, Cole Piotrowski, Cade Flatt and Max Armstrong (fourth, 3:16.63).

Ole Miss will return to Nashville as a full team next weekend, Jan. 17-18, for the Vanderbilt Invitational.
