Rifle Fell Short Against Memphis

OXFORD, Miss. – On Thursday, the Ole Miss rifle team lost to Memphis, 4703-4696. Despite the loss, Olivia Schammel broke her career-best in smallbore and air rifle.
Ole Miss (6-5, 2-3 GARC) saw its veterans lead the way, as Kristen Derting and Lea Horvath finished in second and third place, respectively. On Senior Day, Derting celebrated by notching an 1179. Horvath was just a touch behind Derting, shooting an 1176. Four other Rebels landed in the top-10.
Ole Miss had a tough turnout in smallbore, which would be the deciding factor in the match. Derting cruised to a 588, helped by her perfect prone score. Pereira also fired a perfect 200 in prone and placed in ninth. Horvath finished in third place, hitting a 583. Olivia Schammel began her great day by shattering her personal best in smallbore with a 573.
The Rebels did not go down without a fight, outscoring the Tigers 2375-2369. Their third air rifle score was above 2370 in their last four matches. Four of the five Rebel counters landed in the top-five. Regan Diamond shot her third 595 of the season to lead the Rebels. Pereira fired a 594 for third place, and Horvath and senior Martina Gratz hit a 593 to tie for fourth place. After earning a career-high in smallbore, Schammel brought momentum into air rifle, setting a new personal best of 587.
Ole Miss wraps up conference play on the road at Akron on Saturday, February 10.
