Cross Country Set for 2024 SEC Championships
10/31/2024 | Cross Country
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Ole Miss men's and women's cross country will look to finish strong at the conference meet, with both Rebel squads set to run in the 2024 SEC Cross Country Championships at Texas A&M's Watts Cross Country Course on Friday morning.
SEC Network begins live coverage at 9 a.m. CT, with the women's championship 6K race at 9:08 a.m. CT, followed by the men's championship 8K race at 9:50 a.m. CT. Ranked women's teams in competition include No. 7 Alabama, No. 14 Florida and No. 28 Texas, while the Ole Miss men face ranked teams No. 3 Arkansas and No. 11 Alabama.
The Ole Miss women were projected to finish fifth in the SEC, which also matches their finish at the 2023 conference meet. The Rebel women ultimately earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships after a third-place finish at the NCAA South Regional, and a high finish at SECs this week could help bolster the resume again.
Returning from last year's conference roster and in competition again this week are second-team All-SEC senior Loral Winn (9th), junior Sarah Schiffmann (26th), junior Sophie Baumann (43rd), senior Madison Hulsey (70th) and junior Beth Arentz (104th). Others competing this week are senior Ainhoa Brea, sophomore Adie Luna, junior Frances Luna, senior Emilia Mikszuta and junior Samantha Ouellette.
This season, the Rebel women found success early at the Memphis Twilight with a first-place team finish. All five Rebel scorers finished in the top-10, contributing to a 39-point victory over Mississippi State. The Ole Miss women followed up with a hard fought third-place finish, defeating current No. 14 Florida at Missouri's Gans Creek Classic, where Ole Miss received two impressive races from Winn and Baumann.
Winn enters the conference championships as Ole Miss' top finisher in each of her two races this season, a fourth-place 6K finish at Missouri on Sept. 27 and a 69th-place finish at the Pre-National Invitational. At Missouri, Winn's 6K time of 19:56.8 marked the fifth sub-20 of her career, the most by any Rebel woman in recorded program history.
The Rebel men entered the 2024 season predicted to finish fourth in the SEC polls. A strong finish on Friday morning and at the South Regional would increase the Ole Miss men's chances for an auto-bid or an at-large to the NCAA Championships.
The men have held steady throughout the season due to the leadership of All-SEC junior Toby Gillen (14th) and senior Aiden Britt (47th), who both finished within the top-50 last season. Other SEC returners from last year running this week are senior Jack Meijer (41st), senior Chase Rose (58th) and junior Gabe Scales (59th). Making their conference meet debut Friday will be senior Elyas Ayyoub, senior Benjamin Bayless, freshman Aidan Hodge and junior Evan Thornton-Sherman.
Gillen has led the Rebel pack all season, starting with a sixth-place finish in his season debut at Missouri on Sept. 27, where he finished with a 14-second 8K PR of 23:13.7. Then Gillen followed up with a hard-fought 35th-place finish at Wisconsin's Pre-National Invitational.
Competition begins at 9 a.m. CT on SEC Network. For more information regarding the 2024 SEC Cross Country Championships, visit the conference championship hub HERE.
