Rebels Shut Down Aztecs with Season-High Seven Blocks
BERKELEY, Calif. – In the Rebels' first road game of the season and in the opener of the Raising the B.A.R Invitational Powered by Cal, Ole Miss battled through a slow start to defeat San Diego State 62-48 and to advance to tomorrow's championship game.
It was a combined effort from Ole Miss (5-1) to win the first matchup in series history against San Diego State (4-2) and break the Aztecs two-game winning streak.
Four Rebels finished with eight or more points, as Shakira Austin led Ole Miss for the fourth game in a row with 13 points and 9 rebounds. Madison Scott recorded her fourth double-digit game of the season with 12 points, shooting 5-of-6 from the field. Knocking down a season-high four field goals was Destiny Salary, as the sophomore totaled 8 points. Beyond the arc, Snudda Collins drained two triples as she finished with nine points.
Both teams struggled to convert early, as the Rebels turned the ball over three times out of their first four trips down the floor. It was ultimately an Angel Baker jumper that broke the Ole Miss shooting drought to begin a 6-0 run and close out the quarter 12-2 to lead 17-9.
SDSU refused to go away, cutting the Ole Miss lead to six midway through the second but the Rebel defense continued to stand tall, blocking a first half season-high five shots. Off the bench, the Rebels outscored the Aztecs 10-0 through the first two quarters to carry a 27-17 lead into halftime.
The Ole Miss offense kicked it into high gear to start the third, hitting 5-of-6 attempts to begin the second half as Salary added six points. SDSU could not be stopped throughout the quarter, hitting 76% of their shots as the Rebels continued to hold their lead up by 10 at 50-40 through three.
As the Aztecs inched closer, Ole Miss continued to push forward as Collin's second triple of the day helped the Rebels to secure their lead up by eight with 8:37 remaining. With neither team scoring within a three-minute span, Scott ended the slump with a layup off the left hand. Defensively, the Rebels continued to shut the Aztecs down, restricting them to 3 field goals in the quarter. Fired up, the Rebs finished off the SDSU on a 12-3 run to claim their fifth straight win, 62-48.
Ole Miss returns to action tomorrow (Nov. 27) to take on Cal in the championship game of the Raising the B.A.R. Invitational Powered by Cal at 5 p.m. CT. The matchup against the Golden Bears can be viewed through the Cal Live Stream.
