Rebels Claim First In-Season Trophy Since 2014
BERKELEY, Calif. – The Rebels walked into Haas Pavilion Saturday facing a challenge against an undefeated Cal team and the Pac-12's leading scorer in Jayda Curry and emerged victorious, shutting down the Bears 64-45.
Ole Miss (6-1) won the most games in the month of November since 2017 and picked up its first in-season tournament title since winning the Nugget Classic in 2014. Four Rebels finished in double-figures for the first time this season, as for the fifth straight game Austin led all Rebels with 14 points as the center notched her fifth double-double of the season with 10 rebounds.
On the offense glass, Madison Scott went to work grabbing five offensive rebounds to add to her team-high 11. The sophomore finished with 12 points, for her first double-double of the season.
From beyond the arc, Snudda Collins provided key assistance as the sophomore knocked down two triples to add to her 10 points. Collins currently leads the team with 12 threes on the season.
Lashonda Monk tied her season-high with 12 points, as she added two steals to her active career total as the second best in the nation.
The depth of the Rebels was proven once again, as the bench outscored their opponents for the sixth time this season with 23 points compared to Cal's nine.
Defensively, Ole Miss continues to apply the pressure to its opponents as the Rebels held the Bears (5-1) to shooting a mere 23% from the field and 2-of-18 from three. For the fourth time this season, Ole Miss held its opponent to under 50 points, as Cal only converted on 13 field goals. Heading into today, Curry had been averaging a conference best 22.8 points per game, yet the Rebels restricted her to a season-low 12.
Ole Miss went to work in the paint, scoring their first eight points on the inside to jump out to an 8-2 lead. Forcing early turnovers proved to work in the Rebel favor as both teams struggled to find the basket towards the end of the first quarter.
Austin continued on her defensive tear, with her fifth block of the weekend and a bucket on the return to provide a spark and build the lead up 14-9. Back-to-back Baker jumpers followed by a Collins three lifted Ole Miss to its largest lead of the game, up by 12 to head into halftime at 29-17. Cal's 17 points in the first half were the fewest scored through the first two quarters this season.
Cal cut into the Rebel lead, to pull within 10 during the third quarter despite a shooting slump on both sides of the floor. The Bears repeatedly proved to be a challenge throughout the second half, yet the Rebels responded back with key shots when they needed it most.
At the end of the day Ole Miss found itself with its sixth straight win, taking down the Bears 64-45 to claim its first in-season tournament title since 2014. Austin was tabbed as the All-Tournament MVP, while Monk and Scott picked up spots on the All-Tournament team.
The Rebels head back to Oxford for a Wednesday (Dec. 1) tilt against New Orleans, before heading back out on the road to Ohio to challenge Cincinnati next Sunday (Dec. 5). The Kid's Day matchup against the Privateers can be viewed at 11 a.m. CT on SEC Network +.
