Madison Scott Notches a Career-High 21 Points
OXFORD, Miss. – In the finale of the Rebels' five game season opening homestand, Ole Miss withstood the push from the defending SWAC champions Jackson State for a 79-66 win and their 18th straight in the series over the Tigers.
For the first time this season two Rebels finished with 20 or more points as Ole Miss (4-1) battled through a tough first half from 2021 NCAA Tournament Jackson State (1-2), to win its fourth in a row.
Shakira Austin took over from the start, hitting her first six shots in a row for the Rebels first 13 points of the game. The center ended the day with a season-high 24 points and 10 rebounds, for her third straight double-double and finished with 10 made shots.
Madison Scott added her third double-digit outing of the season and a career-high 21 points, shooting 7-of-13 from the field and adding eight rebounds. The pair are the first two Rebels this year to each score 20 points in a game.
As a team, the Rebels dished out 15 or more assists for the fourth game in a row as Destiny Salary led with a career-high six dimes. Ole Miss restricted Jackson state to a mere one three-pointer, as the Tigers shot 1-of-11 from deep.
After Austin got the Rebels off and running, an early foul put her on the bench, while Jackson State strung together a 5-0 run to even the score at 13 and end the first quarter tied at 17 all.
The Rebels soon found themselves with their largest deficit in four games, trailing by two possessions in the second quarter at 23-19. A triple from Snudda Collins and another lay-in from Austin kept Ole Miss close, yet the team still struggled to make stops on the other end of the court.
However, a 9-2 Rebel run highlighted by five points from Monk put the Rebels up 33-29 for the first time since the opening quarter. The Rebels began to pressure the Tigers defensively, restricting them to hitting only one of their last 10 field goals of the half, as Ole Miss began to pull away to take a 40-31 lead into halftime.
As soon as the Rebels hit the court in the third, the energy was undeniable, as Ole Miss took off on an 11-3 run within the first five minutes of the quarter to extend its lead by 18 to 53-34. The Tigers refused to go away, with a 6-0 run in the last minute of the third to cut into the Rebel lead at 58-46.
Ole Miss continued to utilize fast scoring bursts to continue to build upon its lead, as a 10-0 run in the first three minutes of the fourth, set the tone for the remainder of the game. Despite a 12-0 run from the Tigers to end the game, it was ultimately Ole Miss on top for its fourth-straight win, 79-66.
The Rebels hit the road for the first time this season, with two games out west at the Raising the B.A.R Invitational Powered by Cal this Friday through Saturday (Nov. 26-27). Ole Miss takes on San Diego State in their first matchup Friday at 5 p.m. CT and can be viewed through the Cal Live Stream.
