Women’s Basketball Shuts Down LA Tech in 62-44 Win

11/19/2021 | Women's Basketball

OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss defense continued to display its strength in its third straight win, handing Louisiana Tech its first loss of the season, in a 62-44 victory from the SJB Pavilion Friday night. The win marked the first time in 10 years that the Rebels have held opponents under 50 points in back-to-back outings.

"We've been playing games it seems like every 2 days," said head coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin. "I expected our legs to be kind of tired. I'm not worried about that, I'm focused on defense and rebounding the ball right now because that is how you win."

For the second straight game, Shakira Austin recorded another double-double off of 13 points and 13 rebounds as Ole Miss (3-1) was able to outlast LA Tech (2-1). Rebels continue to make noise on the boards, outrebounding their opponents by 20 or more for the second time this young season. Beyond the arc, Snudda Collins had herself a night draining 4-of-8 from deep to finish with a season-high 12 points and 5 boards.

Right out of the gate from opening tip, Austin got to work quickly driving through the lane for her first bucket of the night, as the Rebels scored on their first three possessions. After the opening run, the offensive output on both ends of the floor slowed down with Ole Miss leading after one, 16-12.

A 6-0 run fired up the Rebels to begin the second quarter, as Ole Miss continued to lock it down defensively forcing pressure on the Lady Techsters to result in six turnovers before the half. Multiple fast breaks by the Rebs kept the energy in their favor, concluding the quarter with 12 straight points to take a 34-14 lead into the locker room.

The Lady Techsters refused to go away quietly, making some noise on defense and capitalizing off of Rebel turnovers in the third. Despite a slow start to the quarter, the Rebels began to hit their stride off of back-to-back Angel Baker buckets to extend their lead by 15, at 42-27.

Both teams played tight into the fourth, until Collins drained her third triple of the night to give the Rebels a secure lead. Ole Miss continued to share the ball for the third straight game with 20 or more assists, as Mimi Reid dished out nine to assist the to the 62-44 win.

"We're going to be a group that tries to figure things out as we go and tonight, we were able to get some really good film and I'm excited to look back at it and see what we have."

The Rebels wrap up their five game homestand, with a Tuesday afternoon tilt against Jackson State (Nov. 23). Ole Miss will take on the Tigers at 2 p.m. CT from the SJB Pavilion on SEC Network +.
