OXFORD, Miss. – La'Karis Salter made her Ole Miss debut in Tuesday night's victory over Norfolk State, scoring eight points and grabbing eight rebounds off the bench. However, it wasn't the first time she has taken the court under first-year Ole Miss head coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin. It wasn't even her first time as a member of an SEC team.
Salter played the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons at Mississippi State before spending 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons at Jacksonville under Coach Yo, and she's thrilled to be back in the SEC.
"In the SEC you have you have taller and stronger people," Salter said. "The Atlantic Sun is a guard's league, so if you can't run with guards it's going to be pretty hard for you."
Following five successful seasons at Jacksonville, Coach Yo was tabbed the ninth head coach in Ole Miss history on April 4 earlier this year. Salter, of course, was one of those Dolphins in the locker room when the news was delivered.
"I was excited for her," Salter said. "She called us into a meeting and she told us. I just smiled and said congratulations."
The transition has gone smoothly thus far for Salter and she believes that the style of play in the SEC is more optimal for her game.
"I'm kind of flashy, but at the same time I have to make the game simple," Salter said. "I like passing first and then scoring. I like stretching the floor and getting my team involved. I like having team chemistry."
Salter has become a fixture at Ole Miss sporting events and community gatherings, and she has become especially visible getting the crowd pumped up at Ole Miss Volleyball matches. In just a few short months, she fallen in love with Oxford and is confident that she made the correct choice to finish her collegiate career.
"I love it here," Salter said. "The environment is great, the fans are great, just the town itself is great. When I go into a store, people know me. They ask me to sign their poster for them, it's just a great environment here."
