Ole Miss' Comeback Falls Short At South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. - Senior Kayla Melson came alive in the second half and finished the game with a career-high 29 points but Ole Miss' late comeback fell short as the Rebels fell at South Alabama 67-60 Sunday afternoon.

With the loss Ole Miss fell to 5-3 on the year while South Alabama improved to 4-4.

After trailing by 20 in the second half, the Rebels cut the lead to six with 4:19 to play thanks in large part to the play of Melson but the Jaguars hit their free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

Melson scored on three straight trips down the floor for the Rebels to bring Ole Miss to within six, 61-55, with 3:59 to play.

After trailing by 18 points midway through the second half, Laws and Melson combined for seven points as the Rebels cut the Jaguars' lead to 12, 51-39, with 10:20 left to play.

Ole Miss shot 40.0 percent (22-of-55) from the floor in the game while South Alabama shot 35.6 percent (21-of-59). Pa'Sonna Hope added 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds for the Rebels.

Melson's three-point play put the Rebels on top 11-9 with 15:34 left in the first half before South Alabama went on a run to go up, 19-11, with 12:43 remaining in the half.

Hope's jumper cut the Jaguars' lead to nine with 7:38 left in the half but South Alabama used a 17-4 run to push its lead to 36-19 with 4:02 remaining.

The Jaguars lead at the half, 36-22. Melson led Ole Miss at the half with nine points while Hope had eight. The Rebels shot 35.7 percent (10-of-28) from the floor while the Jaguars shot 40.6 percent (13-of-32) including eight three pointers.

Ole Miss will host Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday at 1 p.m.
