OXFORD, Miss. - Junior James Shortall and freshman Alexander Hartman of the No. 14 nationally-ranked Ole Miss men's tennis team were named to the All-SEC second team as the conference awards were announced Wednesday.
This is the second year in a row for Shortall to be named All-SEC as he earned first team honors last year. Hartman is one of five freshman to be selected to one of the All-SEC teams. The Rebels have had a total of 29 All-SEC selections since 1977.
"It is a tremendous honor to be named to the All-SEC team because this is the premier conference in the nation," head coach Billy Chadwick said. "This is the second year in a row for James to be All-SEC and it's especially exciting to have a freshman named to this elite group."
Shortall, a native of Feilding, New Zealand, is currently ranked No. 59 in the nation in singles and No. 27 in doubles with Vikrant Chadha. He has a 14-14 overall record and has posted consecutive wins over nationally-ranked opponents.
Hartman, who hails from Klippan, Sweden, is arguably one of the top freshman in the country and is currently the second-highest ranked freshman. Hartman is ranked No.35 with a 31-14 overall record. He posted his biggest win of the spring, knocking off 15th-ranked Oskar Johansson of Arkansas to clinch a 4-0 win for the Rebels and also was the deciding match in the Rebels' win over South Carolina.
Both have helped guide the Rebels to a 17-4 overall record, 9-2 in the SEC. The Rebels will be the third seed in the SEC Championships which begin Thursday in Starkville. Ole Miss has a bye in the first round and will meet the winner of the #6 Mississippi State/#11 Alabama match on Friday at noon.
